Helicopter Trim issue with P3D version 3.4

Recommended Posts

I just started flying copters in P3D, and my experience is several years of RC Copters doing aerobatics, and a couple of hours in an R22 so I am pretty familiar with basic copter theory and handling.. The first copter I got was the Milviz 407 followed by the 530F.  I had read that it was possible to configure pitch trim in these copters, using the normal control trim assignments in either P3D or FSUIPC for elevator trim, so thyat I wouldn't have to hold a constant forward cyclic pressure when cruising. Since I fly fixed wing and have many payware aircraft like A2A and PMDG, and Q400, types,  I normally use FSUIPC to program in my control  axis and switch settings so that when I go from one aircraft to  the other, my controls are all working correctly for that aircraft. .

Now I  set up the 530F controls and the try and set up for pitch trim using the elevator axis up and down trim adjustments. When I hit the up or down trim just one click , the cyclic in the copter makes a wild jump either forwards or backwards, which sends the copter on an immediate pitch up or pitch down. Not at all what one would see in an aircraft, where adjusting the pitch a small amount would produce a very subtle change in pitch of the aircraft. Also, if I can play with the trim adjustments and actually produce some kind of decent change in pitch  while I am flying in cruise, the slightest touch of the cyclic, immediately disconnects the trim I had set , and usually if I am at a good airspeed, the nose immediately pitches way  up. Now the only thing left trying to figure out this problem, is the possibility that   assigning controls with FSUIPC is causing this issue, so I decided to try reassigning  the controls for the elevator ( cyclic pitch) in P3D, and turn off the FSUIPC assignment. Now FSUIPC is eliminated as a cause of this issue, since the control is now just P3D. I get basically the same effect, so apparently it is not something that FSUIPC is causing. So after a couple of days of working with this issue, I have come to the conclusion that not using pitch adjustments at all, is probably the most sensible and reliable way to fly these copters in P3D, and just get used to holding forward cyclic pressure when cruising.

The purpose of this post is to see if others have similar experience, or if they don't and pitch adjustments in P3D work well, does anyone have a suggestion as to what I might try, because at this point I am out of ideas.

Hi Bob , it was my experience that one would set the position using ones stick and then set the pitch trim with a click on the switch for pitch trim or with a keyboard assignment .

Never did I use the FS default elevator trim as that isn't effective in helos .

So what are you using to make the assignment, FSUIPC?

Milviz made a trim module , its assignable and also has a clickspot , the use of the system is detailed in the POH , no FSUIPC required

I found out yesterday, after many hours of troubleshooting that the forced trim in the 407 copter will not work if controls in P3D are disabled, which is what I do when using FSUIPC for control assignments. When I enabled the controls, in P3D, then the forced trim assigned keys and the button in the VC work, but I have too many different aircrafts that are set up in FSUIPC to not use FSUIPC. I posted this on the 407 Milviz forum, and the programmer said then in an update, that forced trim will be re-written so that FSUIPC or turning off controls in the sim will not have any affect on the forced trim functionality.

Try enabling the the controller in P3D, but delete all the axis assignments and button assignments in P3D so FSUIPC can control them. Then assign your trim button.

I had it  that way awhile back, and every once in awhile the controls would reactivate in P3D all by themselves, which can happen if they are enabled while running FSUIPC. That is why I finally disabled them on the advice of the FSUIPC creator. Never had that issue again.

Spent some more time on this issue and I decided to try and set up with 530F using just FSUIPC control axis for pitch, using the joystick calibration in FSUIPC for elevator. I did not use the FSUIPC Helicopter entry in the ini. I then assigned a joystick up and down trim adjustment again in FSUIPC for elevator, and now I have pitch trim in the 530F and it works very well.
