  1. 1. How Interested Are You In Virtual Reality?

    • I'm already in!
    • I'm kind of interested
    • Not interested at all
    • It's for Games, not Sims
    • Its not ready yet
    • Too expensive!

I would have placed this poll in the VR forum, but if you even know where that is, you've probably already selected as somebody with a higher than average interest. What I want is the views of the average forum denizen, checking in for the latest, while sipping his/her coffee

For a cockpit builder/owner, the VR headset is a no go and an incomplete simulation. I am looking at 3D monitors and/or projection.

I'm quite keen for this technology but don't feel the available pixel resolution or FPS is sufficient to lure me into it at the moment (so I checked 'it isn't ready yet'). I don't want to be an early adopter of VR but I'd be willing to spend quite a bit for a no-compromise offering maybe in a couple of years.

I am one of those who is not interested in them. If i wanted the real thing, i would be trying to get there i guess.

Topic/poll moved to VR Forum.  There are more forums on AVSIM than just the Hangar Chat Forum.

I am very interested! I bought TrackIr back then, very soon after it became available in Germany. It just took the immersion to a different level for me! And I am pretty sure, that VR is a huge step into the total immersion! ;-) It's just still a bit too expensive for me. But hopefully, prices will go down here in Europe in the not too distant future, and I'm really looking forward to trying it out, once I can afford it!

I would like to know more about it. It's interesting to me particularity for helicopters. That's when I feel like my monitor is restricting my view a little bit. I would be interested in what other heli pilots think and if there are any out there that have tried flying a heli with VR.

I'm kind of interested and pretty sure I'll buy into it eventually. I'm not sure when though. I'd like better resolution, but I also have some reservations about how I'd actually use it for civilian flight sims (combat sims are a whole other discussion, and I don't do much combat these days).

Most of my sim time is spent on flights of an hour or two duration (real time) in the FSEconomy game. I use TrackIR for takeoffs, then turn it off when established in cruise so my view isn't bobbing around when I'm tabbing over to a web browser to pass the time. Then I enable TrackIR again when landing.

I can't see that process working as well with VR. I know the immersion must be fantastic, but I'm probably not going to keep a facebrick on my head for a full two hours, even if I could window-in a web browser. And it would be much more immersion-shattering to switch back and forth to a flat monitor, compared to just turning off head tracking with TrackIR. It seems to me that VR is better suited to shorter flights.

So I dunno... I'm not going to buy it just for the occasional screaming run down the Grand Canyon for fun,and I'm a bit skeptical about whether it would be worth it on these FSEconomy flights. I think what will get me into it is another application, like getting back into combat sims one day. Or a space sim that interests me more than Elite:D did. That might do it, and then I'd see if it might work for civilian flying too.

For me it's pretty clear, I'll extend my FSX's life as long as possible and hope by then there's a decent VR flight sim with deep systems planes!

Sure I know there's flight inside, but I feel like I rather save all that money for a second/third generation VR system and then help build the next big FS community :)

But I fear that this is still quite a while out in the future. In any case I'm excited to see it!

For me also it would have to recognize my hands, not just hold controllers to point at. But we'll see I'm open to completely different user interfaces!

Yeah, that's the other thing; haptic controllers aren't really here yet. At least not the way flight sim pilots would probably want them.

I'm already set up for VR in that sense, because everything I need for main flight control is under my fingers already with a Warthog joystick and throttle quadrant. And I think I could still use the mouse for what isn't, like dialing in an altitude preselect on the AP. But then I don't fly anything more complex than light GA and helicopters.

This will be a problem for people flying airliners, but maybe there will be intermediate solutions short of a full VR glove with force feedback.

Hello to all,

I would just like to submit this and mainly for the people running multiple monitors.

I have not voted in this as yet as I feel I do not fit into any of the categories.

VR for me is (or would be) cheaper for me to replaceinstall, than the six monitors I currently use.  I believe cost for VR complete with touch hands is in the region of AUD1200.00  and my displays (see Signature for details) would cost me so much more to throw away. However in order to do this I am thrust firmly into the hardware upgrade area.  This is something I will have to do eventually  anyway and I have accepted the inevitable. An upgrade very seriously affects the VR cost naturally so until the necessary.funds come my way via a lottery win or similar avenue, I am not in the market for VR just yet.

As I have mentioned before in this and other forums, the antiquity of my system allows me to run FS9 only and I have all the Flightsim platforms except IL2 and DCS.  None of these allow me to run with my current display set up. It has taken me years of learning, hard work, and frustration to get to my level of simming and quite frankly I do not want to return to a single monitor or even just three monitors. I  have grown to love my cockpit feeling and do not want to lose that.  VR is certainly a concept to consider.

What I would really like though, is a touch screen set up.  I do not want to think about the cost (LOL) of a 40 inch touch screen for my overhead panels, a 60 inch touch screen for my main VR cockpit screen, a 22 inch touch screen for my FMS/lower DU panel and a 24 inch touch screen for the aft electrical pedestal panel. BUT ..... for me this have to be close to the ultimate set up and, slightly cheaper than buying a Jetmax or similiar complete cockpit setup.

Having said all of this, I have fantasized (and replaced jocks ... sorry) about VR and am very and totally convinced that VR is the way of the future of Sims generally.

Oh for my touch screens though. I cannot help wondering if anyone else has thought about this and shares my dream or thinks that I am just crackers. As an aged pensioner, I quite often think that a reality (VR?) check is probably in order at this time.

Anyway, I would be very interested to hear how people feel or think about this option and look forward to some more input.

Regards as usual to all

Tony Chilcott

I think though, for be a brilliant option

I think there are many good reasons to still use flight sims with monitors (some mentioned above) but I am so glad that I will never have to do that again.

Hi there,

i just got into VR with a Rift. I came from a 1080p beamer. As Rivet said there are many good reasons to stay on monitors or in my case beamers. Besides cockpit building is the -ATM- poor resolution and the screendoor (or snow goggle) effect. As for now i will mainly focus on VR as i have to move out the office room to make space for my baby daughter :) I wont have the space for a beamer for a loooong time.

VR is still in its beginnings so lets see what happens in the future. Main focus for hardware devs is to get rid of the goggle effect and create a wider FOV and the software devs optimize their codes for obvious reasons, crank up the frame rates at reasonable visual settings.

Hmmmmmm.... The numbers are interesting so far, but with such a low sample size, I'm not sure how representative it is. I was hoping for at the very least a hundred votes.

Will be interesting to watch as it fills in.
