8GB VS 16GB

Hey guys,

sorry im posting so regularly i must be annoying some :D.

currently in my system im running an 7600k @ 4.5ghz, GTX 970 and 8gb of ram ddr4 2133mhz.

would i see a difference if i stick another 8gb module in there?.

would you consider it to be a positive.

i know p3d is 32bit but would it help a little :D

Are you running two 4GB modules or one 8GB module?  DIMMs should be installed in pairs.  If you're using only one DIMM, then a second one (of the same type) would help speed things up by adding a second channel.  If you're running 8Gb of RAM as two 4GB DIMMs (as you should be), then adding two more for a total of 16GB will not make a difference in P3D v3.x--P3D only uses 4GB max, while the OS might use ~2GB.  Adding just *one* DIMM to a pair is a bad plan.

When/if P3D goes 64-bit, then this will change...additional RAM may make a significant difference then.

Im using one 8gb stick at the moment. a crucual 8gb 2133mhz

In that case what might give you the most bang for your buck is removing your existing 8gb stick of 2133 RAM and getting 2 matched sticks of 4gb 3200 mhz or faster low latency ram. This would give you the dual memory channel operation as Bob stated plus faster memory than you have. However when the 64 bit sims arrive you might be wish you had waited or bought more capacity.

Either way, I'd wait for Bob's opinion on this though as he knows much more about computer hardware than I do.

just look in your task manager at how much ram you are using while you're flying the sim. if it's below 7Gb you're probably fine. above that (it will cap at 7.5) i'd suggest 16Gb all the way.

sometimes the OS eats a lot more than people think it does, and if you use your computer for addons that run outside the sim like weather (AS2016 =200meg)/atc etc while simming, it gives you a lot more freedom to not worry about hitting the limit.

for me i tend to also have things open like pfpx (500meg), navigraph charts(70meg), performance calculator, maybe some websites for reading druing cruise...a couple tabs  of avsim forums in chrome chews up several hundred megabytes too (which is ridiculous..chrome is really out of hand lately.. but that is the way things are, haha)..  

when i measured it i discovered that when i'm flying the sim my total usage hits 9 or even 10 gigs quite frequently. when i had 8Gb of ram, that meant stuttering while it started to page some of that stuff on and off the disk (even with SSD is noticeable as it is still magnitudes slower than actual ram). 

if you have a very stripped down setup and don't open other software at all it may not be necessary. just look in the task manager performance tab and keep an eye on things and it can indicate if you may be needing more.

16 will always be better than 8 in a 64 bit OS. With 16 you will have more left for your own use as opposed to if you offered the OS only 8. If you do have to juggle with funds, then the suggestion of two faster ram 4 gig sticks will help as opposed to a single 16 stick. Always do your best to be able to run dual channel (not possible with one stick)

I don't see any measurable or meaningful return on such as investment.  If you are building a system then by all means go with 16 GB 3400 MHZ DDR4 memory; however, as far as spending money on an existing system I think you'd be better off adding a liquid cooler and using your overclock capabilities.

I agree with Dan. Yes, you will probably get an improvement but "bang for the buck" is not there. Unless you were running a bunch of benchmarks I really doubt you would notice any difference at all.

The cooler overclock suggestion would be a better expense.

Just remember it's never a good idea to add a new ram stick to existing ram sticks even if they are the identical type. If the sticks weren't matched and packaged together when you bought them you can have system issues. I have had this happen twice ("blue screen of death" taking quite a bit of trouble shooting to identify the added "identical" ram) over the years and it seems to be a higher risk when you are using faster ram like your system has.

Therefore if you were to upgrade to 16Gb I would suggest buying a new matched pair of 8Gb sticks.

AHH just what i did today came across corsair vegence ram 16gb 2400mhz ddr4 packed together . thought if im going to upgrade might as well do it once and get it over with. running smooth no problems seems like it gave me a better sim experience and no stutters
