Upgrade GTX470 to GTX 1060 MOBO compatible?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am about to pull the trigger and upgrade my GTX470 to a GTX1060.

They are both GDDR5 PCI express cards but will the GTX1060 be compatible with my P6X58D-E X58 MOBO (Socket 1366 DDR3)? My system is about 7 years old. I7 950 @ 4ghz with 6 gb RAM and SATA HDD if that helps you.

Any advice greatly appreciated

A 1060 should work fine in your X58 mobo.  PCI-E 3 gcards are downwards compatible with PCI-E 2 slots. Just be sure your PSU can handle the new card (which it probably can, I guess).

Hi Folks,

Don't expect miracles - a year or so ago I upgraded my i2700K at 4.7 Ghz from a top end GTX570 to a top end GTX970 - performance increases seemed negligible...

Regards,
Scott

This is what I think too.

The card probably won't perform at its peak (MB might not fully support the card's full bandwidth capability), but would be still a nice upgrade.

You should have no problems running it on the X58. The performance difference with a PCIe 2.0 board is small. Have a look at http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/pci-express-scaling-game-performance-analysis-review,1.html for a comprehensive explanation - long article but worth reading. To quote from the conclusion: "As the article has shown, if you use a single high-end graphics card then really, even the PCIe Gen 1.1 slot would be sufficient. Gen 2.0 is preferred and Gen 3.0 only brings in a marginal improvement."

Ok guys thanks for your replies.

I went and bought an X52 instead of the graphics card (impulse buy). Anyways, ill probably get a 1060 as the starting point of a full system overhaul in the next month or two when I have a few bob available again.
