FMS is not putting in Altitudes/Vspeeds

Good morning,

I have been attempting to fly a 747 from KLAX or KSFO to EHAM using the KLM 747-400 repaint (new colors) from the operations center. I put the weights, fuel and everything in the FMS. I then upload the .RTE file and it wont put the vspeeds or calculate altitudes. Is there something I am missing?

FMS preflight normally starts with IDENT page, then POS page where we set the INS. Then the route, then the PERF which you did before the route.  Kinda backwards but it should work.  Vspeeds and VNAV calcs require an aligned INS among other things.

Have you flown the tutorial?  It really is important to do that even if you are type certified in the B744.

Yes.

I'm willing to bet that you're rushing your preflight. On the PERF INIT page, you're glancing at the values to punch numbers in and seeing numbers, but not properly vetting them. Look at the Gross Weight value at the top left. It will likely have a < next to it. This means that the value must be checked against the dispatch paperwork and confirmed. This should be done no matter what type of equipment the aircraft has, so this shouldn't trip you up, but most simmers just hammer away at the FMC out of habit. Slow down. Be methodical. Verify. Continue.

Boom! Thanks Kyle. That was the problem. With all the other flights I have flown, for some reason I didn't recognize this issue until today and you brought it to my attention. Thanks for your help. Also thanks Dan for your input as well! Cheers!

Welcome. It changes based on the plane, because some are equipped with weight sensors, and some are not, depending on the livery.ini file.

It's a pretty common trip up, and somewhat understandably so.

Ha funny, this happened to me yesterday when on a new livery that I had not flown before.  Now I tend to be a bit methodical so I did notice the weight with the < next to it and double checked from my PFPX document and also double checked that I was indeed below max takeoff weight.  Got through the hold up once I clicked on the key to the left and verified the weight was correct, then all others issues fell in to place.

Another gotcha is going from autostart to manual start, but these things generally only bite you once.
