Hi Everyone

just finishing up a new build and want to finish it up with a new monitor. I am running an I7700K and GTX 1070 OC gpu.

My problem is that my old monitor was a LG 24" 1920x1080 and i found it difficult to read some of the gauges at times.

Do i look at purely a bigger screen size at 1920 x 1080 or should i be looking for additional resolution as well?

My understanding is that text will be much smaller at the higher resolution and as such not sure what to do.

I am 50 years old and don't see as well as i used to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Tim Carter

I changed my monitor last year and I found that once you get above 24", 1920x1080 starts to look quite pixelated. I initially looked at 27", 2560x1440 but found that text in the FSX Alt menu was a little too small for me (old age starting to set in). I eventually settled on a 32", 2560x1440 monitor and couldn't be happier. For me it seems to be the sweet spot for screen resolution vs text readability.

Hi Vortex

thanks for the feedback. I am not saying you are wrong but unless you have an ultra modern TV, aren't most 42"-50" TV's running the same resolution 1920x1080 and we were all pretty happy with it?

Dont get me wrong, i am also seriously considering the option you mentioned however i look at my HD TV at 42" and thought it was pretty good, its just the 4K versions these days are even better.

Would love to hear more feedback from the group.

Cheers

FSX will look terrible on a 42" 1080p screen unless you sit far enough away. In which case you might as well stick with what you have. It's all about dots per inch (actually dots per degree of your visual field, but for the same viewing distance you can just compare dpi).

Ok sounds like i am looking for a 32" 2560x1440 monitor if the budget can stretch that far.

Any advice on one that is good but won't break the bank?

Cheers

Tim

Last year i got the Dell 34" curved monitor. I recommend it without reservation. Great immersion.

I agree completely with what Mark said above. You sit much further away from a TV which is why you don't notice the pixels. Once you get within a metre, which is where you'd normally be to view a monitor, things don't look nearly as good - and for some reason computer images seem to look even worse because they're not softened slightly like the broadcast TV image. In your original post you talked about wanting more detail in the gauges and you'll only get this at the higher resolutions. Some people use big, 1920x1080 TVs and are happy with them but I found that even a 27" monitor looked disappointing for me at that resolution.

Most. if not all, of the 32" 2560x1440 monitors have Samsung AMVA screens and you'd think that the Samsung monitor would be best. Things may have changed over the last year but the Samsung version didn't control brightness well when it was turned down below about 30%. It started to look quite flickery. When I last checked, the two best monitors at this size where the AOC Q3277PQU (mine - highly recommended but very expensive outside Europe) and the BenQ BL3200PT. As Dave pointed out, the 34" 3440x1440 monitors are also very popular but about twice as expensive as the 32" models.
