777 feels nose heavy on final

Recommended Posts

hello guys,

ive been noticing as ive been on final on the 777 with auto pilot disengaged, everything looks fine the aircraft just feels so nose heavy and when i pull the yoke back it takes forever to lift the nose and it feels like im siking into the ground and then my ils just gets messed up.

i use pfpx and set all my weights correctly into the fmc before the flight all the calculations seems correct as they match up i set the trim for takeoff as it gives in the "takeoff page".

is there something that im missing to setup on approach?.

i have also reduced my speed down to "ref" speed on apprach and that seems all fine im not going to fast or slow and everything is set correctly in the FMC.

Trim.

I was going to suggest re-trimming the aeroplane, but the reply from Mr. Rodgers carries infinitely more credence ;)

Sorry for my ignorance guys, but is there a certain value i have to trim to?. like for take off in the fmc it gives a trim value lets say for 2,75 but is there one for landing somewhere?.

No, but this explains your issue.

You trim to relieve pressure on the yoke. If you're holding back pressure, you trim up so that you don't have to hold that pressure on the yoke.

Right so if im correct i just trim till i feel the aircraft isnt dropping if i let go of the yoke.

1. You're flying a heavy aircraft, one of the heaviest in the world.

2. Trim, trim trim!

3. Practice doing full visual approaches with the MCP completely unlit to get a feel for the aircraft ;)

She's fun to fly once you understand the dynamics and flight control surfaces.

I would suggest you activate the FBW speed reference bug in the setup menus. Just adjust the trim until the bug is at your desired approach speed.

Out of curiosity, are you attempting to land without the AT engaged?  For whatever reason, flying without the AT engaged makes the flare for landing rather "heavy" and gives you little authority over the pitch of the aircraft.  I used to have this issue and ascertained that flying with the AT engaged at all times makes the aircraft much more flareable and sensitive to yoke inputs.

Ditto what Tom said.  My first flight instructor taught me to fly with trim... in a simulator it is a little more complex because we don't "feel" control forces but the concept is similar. Pitch with elevator then trim to match... or use the FBW bug.

Agree with Mark too, the 777 can be flown to the runway with A/T unlike the other Boeings; however, it is a good idea to learn to fly without the A/T one you feel comfortable using it.
