Digital Aviation Piper Cheyenne

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

This seems to have some interest - just wanted to start a thread on my little pet project improving the DA Piper Cheyenne for use in P3D... It's still a work in progress and taking a bit more time than I thought... I'm pretty limited on what I can accomplish...

I have the GTN650 installed - replacing the Trimble with two caveats:

  • For some reason you need to have the GPS/VLOC switch in VLOC when you load the plane otherwise the CDI on the HSI doesn't deflect with course guidance...
  • For the life of me I can't seem to get the autopilot to capture the glide slope on a GPS/RNAV/VTP approach - I could have sworn I had this working previously but it doesn't seem to now - it still flies all the lateral guidance including procedure turns... ILS Approaches seems to functional normally including glide slope capture...

Even with the two issues - I much prefer having the GTN available - just turn of the autopilot when you intercept the glide slope and hand fly the GPS approach...

Preliminary file changes only the Cheyenne 1A - it's easy enough to duplicate for the other aircraft and I'll include them in the finished pack - this is for those who just want to try the GTN mods...

Test File GTN Mods Cheyenne 1A: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lmln79nlk1o05yw/CheyenneGTN.zip?dl=0

My work for an official upload should contain the following:

  • I'm working on doing some minor mods (texture maps are pretty bad) to paints to make them more applicable to flights in the US...
  • I'm adding Shockwave Lights to fix the massive saucer shaped recognition lights (I'll see if there is a good default P3D effect as well)...
  • I'm working on improving the chrome spinner textures for a better look in P3D...
  • GTN 650 replacing Trimble on all models...
  • Replace the Wx Radar with Milviz/REX Wx Radar...

Work in Progress:

Note: If anyone has any ideas on how to get the autopilot to capture the GPS Glide Slope - I'd sure appreciate any help I could get... Honestly - any help or input would be most welcome...

Scott

I just flew the RNAV to 04 at KBHB. The autopilot did not capture the glide slope initially. After the glide slope was active it did capture and hold the glide slope. I was using my 750/650.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the response... So I'm not following 100% - how did you get it to capture the GPS glide slope ? After the initial fail - you're now above it - did you manually dive the aircraft under to acquire - did you change any buttons in the interim - does the Alt Hold light go out ? I think I've tried all the relevant possibilities in the Cheyenne and GTN config files...

Scott

I manually captured the glide slope, then the auto pilot held it. I will fly it again soon and advise.

Nice - is there a pic with the GTN650?

Hi Ryan,

It would be far better if we could blank all the 3D knobs in the radio stack - Greg has both the 650 and 750 - - - in just using a he 750 squeezed into the Trimble slot...

I've chatted with Hans Hartman a few times over the years on this bird - if I can get everything working - after he gets the CRJ out - might try and see if I could get him to blank the rest of the knobs - with a GTN some of the radios and transponders a redundant and could be removed...

Any screenshots showing the GTN750? I'm glad to see the Digital Aviation Piper Cheyenne in P3D. Wold love to see the IIXL version modified too some day.

Hi,

The problem with the larger GTN is that the only 3D knobs we have the ability to blank on the Cheyenne are those for the Trimble which has a really small footprint - so the knobs would show sticking out of the 750 due to its size...

I have the 650 in the IIXL as well... The last aircraft in my first post is the IIXL...

Scott

Here is a 750/650 combo in the IIXL. You can see the knobs Scott was talking about.

Hi Patrick,

Look'n good... Thanks so much for sharing... Yeah - in P3D we have an issue with the Shockwave Lights - when retracted into the aircraft - the light stays on and from ground views - you can see the light bloom pass through the model... I used the Shockwave Recognition Lights as they don't have the 3D Bloom thereby minimizing the problem...

Those lights in your pix look superb in FSX though...

Yeah - as per your image it looks like you are using the ILS which seems to work in P3D as well... The problem only presents on GPS Approaches that have vertical guidance - the Blue GPS light needs to be lit instead of the Green LOC light... The GPS creates a pseudo glide slope beam to fly without referencing any ILS equipment on the ground... Off the top of my head - the KMSV RNAV/GPS approach into 15 - is VTP - and will offer such guidance...

What's really improved with the use of P3D are the dynamic reflections on the aircrafts skin - it looks a lot better than it did in FSX...

Great bird - thanks again for your input and interest...

Regards,

Scott

Hi Scott,

sorry, missed the point about the RNAV.  on fsx, ap does react to the RNAV vertical guidance needle but it always seems to over/undershoot so it's not stable.  i tried to play around with the ap parameters in aircraft.cfg but no luck damping the response.

as for extinguishing the gear mounted landing light at gear retraction,  i presume you're using the 'gear up light turn off' gauge in panel.cfg?   something like

gauge72=shockwave_lights!SW lights_gear_taxi, 1, 1, 1, 1

anyway, i've been using the cheyenne since the fs9 version and it still has 'it.'

i'll graduate to p3d when the 64b version comes out, hopefully not in the distant future...

Hi Patrick,

Let me try messing with those lights again - thanks...

Reworked N83CA and added H118HB with some poetic license - also shows the Shockwave lights I have in place now...
