GTX 980 TI STRIX Upgrade Question

Hi All,

I was thinking about upgrading my Asus GTX 980 TI STRIX to a GTX1070, mainly to get the 8GB RAM as I can easily consume the 6GB that is on the 980.

Before I do anything I thought I would ask if apart from the extra memory is the 1070 a worthy upgrade. I cannot justify the move up to a 1080 right now

It's been said that the 1070, is the "sweet spot" for graphics vs. cost, as well as a very good performer for XP.  I have the 1080 8gb and it performs extremely well right now.  You should be fine with the 1070.

 That's a fairly costly upgrade just to get 2 more gb of vram though. I can't imagine that you'll see any performance increases from it, the 980Ti and 1070 are pretty well even.

Then I guess a good question to the OP is whether they are gpu or cpu bound?  Running the cpu and gpu limits data in XP will reveal the issue.  I understand that VRAM is important, but even if you happen to hit the limit, it isn't the end of the world, you may just incur lower frames at times. Judging by the OP's specs, I'd recommend more RAM.

I find that my GPU usage is always lower than CPU. Although the 980 TI doesn't seem to be pushed I can very easily run out of VRAM. 

i was messing around last night and stumbled across something by pure chance.

i normally run adaptive half refresh rate in Nvidia control panel to lock my frames to 30. I always found this gave me the best result on my 42 inch 1080P LED Tv. With this setup I would typically see my CPU usage around the 0.30 mark, always higher than my GTX 980 TI Strix. When I changed the setting in Nvidia control panel to off at the same airport, same plane (Jar A330) & weather with my frames unlocked the CPU usage dropped to around 0.15 - 0.20 and matched my GPU usage almost perfectly.

i just assumed that my i3570k @ 4.6 was having a bit of a time keeping up with the sim but now I am not so sure

I don't think you are going to see much of a gain only going to a 1070 with more 2gb of ram to justify the cost.  As Dave said, the 980ti and 1070 are pretty much equal. I also have a 980ti and am getting a 1080ti with 11gb and much faster clock speeds.   I always prefer the ti's being as they are much better cards.  I personally would save for at least a stock 1080 even though Ben said a 1070 is the sweet spot.

I'm sure most of us would prefer a 1080ti but some must cloth, feed and provide medical care for their children!

That's why I said he should save for at least a stock 1080!  I would not plan on upgrading unless it's going to make a considerable difference which a 1070 would not in this case.

It probably isn't the best time to upgrade. I did wonder about the extra 2GB of VRAM being enough. 

Question to those of you out there with 1080 cards & 11GB of VRAM, are you actually using anywhere near all of that memory?

i just bought a 1080ti up from a 1070, it's very expensive, but what i always do is try to upgrade every cycle, if you sell the 980ti for 300.00 and buy the 1080 it will only cost you 200.00, for the upgrade, i could never afford to buy a ti outright because I have so many important needs, my 7 year old, bills ect.. so each cycle I try to sell my current card and to offset the cost. if I had to pay outright every time, i would still be back on a gtx 480 and a 2600k.if you can sell your 1080ti for 300-350 on eBay or facebook, or wherever you sell items at, it does make it more affordable. I could build a whole zen computer for what the 1080ti cost. I did buy the reference 1080ti FE, because i bought a water block for my loop, buying an aftermarket cooler would have been dumb.i actually upgraded from a 980ti to a 1070 when the 1070 launched, I didn't notice a huge framerate bump, but it was nice having the 8gb VRAM for x-plane and my other sims I play.I don't see anything wrong with the bump to a 1070, if you sell the 980ti for say 350.00, you are only paying 60.00 for the 2gb of extra VRAM and can stay on the current generation. the 1180 is probably only a year away and the cycle repeats. if the 1170 has more VRAM than my 1080ti, I will bump to it depending on cost. go with what you can afford, I don't think you can go wrong with the 1070.i play planetcoaster, x-plane 11, train sim world, tower3d and traiz a new era, most will take anything you can throw at it.

I just purchased the EVGA 1080ti Gaming SC2 Edition and am looking forward to seeing how it performs. I will test it in Xp11 and report back if it uses all the 11gb and how much of an increase in FPS I get.  Am not expecting miracles though, being I currently have a 4770K with 16gb ram.  Once the i7-7740K is released, I will upgrade to it and the motherboard \ ram.

My Asus 1080ti FE will be here today, I wanted to buy the Asus Strix, but I didn't see the point of the extra cost, just to remove the fans to install the water block, not to mention the Strix cards are either sold out or being price gauged right now. I already have a Thermaltake custom water loop, so I decided why not just add the video card to the loop.sadly just the water block is 139.00 on its own along with the extra connectors adds 170.00 on top of the 699.00 price tag of the 1080ti.

How are you finding your 1080 TI? Are you using anywhere near the 11GB VRAM?

I have a buyer lined up for my GTX 980TI and have found a 6 month old lightly used Gigabyte 1080 TI for a decent price which would make the upgrade much more doable. I know my CPU will be the bottleneck but this could tide me over until I can upgrade the CPU/motherboard/RAM next year

A 1080ti is the definite card for X-Plane. I am regularly seeing VRAM usage exceed 8GB and thus are happy to have it. That said, the CPU is still god in the X-Plane world.

I hope to upgrade the other components next year so the 1080 TI should be good for a little while lol
