My PC is dead. CPU or Cooler problem?

My PC froze today and now when I start the PC again, it quickly shuts itself down with a message "CPU Temperature" issue

 

IS it my CPU (Intel Core i7-6700K ) that is dead of the 100i Watercooler I have that stopped functioning? I can feel the fan on the cooler working...

I managed to get into my BIOS and the temp is showing 89degrees. That is too hot.

I'm doubtful its your CPU. Cooler issue sounds like to me. Probably a pump issue.

Check the rad is free of dust.

Check the fans are working.

Check the cooler is mounted properly.

Re- apply TIM.

You could try a cheap air cooler to test.

Manny, how long have you had the watercooler installed? Has it worked OK previously? Are there any leaks? Are all of the motherboard connectors secure (power and USB)?

I have had it the last 6 months.. I built this system about 6-7 months ago

The day before yesterday  I heard a weird sound... thought one of the wires were touching the fan or something...then that sound went away yesterday... and then this happens.. Its all secure. I don't see a leak..but then I have not looked at it carefully. I was busy with something and I left the PC in the dark corner...  This weekend I need to pull it out and check it our properly.

I do have a cheap cooler.. Like martin suggested, I could try that out. This is my first water cooler (Corsair).. not happy.

after keeping the pc off for 15 minutes or so and having installed a cpu temp monitor. Restart your pc and load the cpu monitor to observe the cpu temp. If it continues to rise until the pc shuts down again, you know that cooling the cpu is the issue. If your water cooler appears to be functioning normal, it may be the heatsink having separated from the cpu. Your finger on the cpu and the heatsink should also tell you something.

If you can get it to run for long enough, the Corsair Link software will give you the pump RPM to eliminate that as the culprit.

Your pump has almost certainly failed.  Get a cheap air cooler and slap it on there for now, replace if desired.

Might also want to check the thermal paste. Perhaps too little or too much or an air pocket. Just a thought

Yup..it was my cooler.. I did not swap the cooler to find out.. I simply took out the old one and sent it to Corsair and I got a new one.., I installed it and my PC starts up fine.

 

Except I mixed up all my USB devices and now I get the crappy, you have too many USB devices message... I had this issue before but I forget how I solved it.. minor issue. I'll have to deal with.

 

I am glad I got my sim back! I was having withdrawal issues. I didn't know what to do with my life.  LOL :)

Had the same issue with my AIO watercooling. It was the pump. Buy a new AIO cooling system.

My PC was shutting down after about 10 seconds, did not even make it into Windows.
