Can someone define something for me about Ortho4XP

I'm building tiles as I type.

My question is, what is the difference between the built tiles, and an Overlay?

If I run XP11 with the Ortho4XP tiles, without building an Overlay, will I see any difference upon flying over my assigned tiles, vs. no custom tiles.

Still learning...having never delved into this...
