Operations Center update nightmare

Recommended Posts

On Friday afternoon I opened the Ops Center and was notified that an update was available so I went ahead and updated it.  After the update was completed I attempted to restart it and nothing was coming up on the desktop.  After a couple more minutes of waiting I went into Task Manager and saw that the process was running but I had no UI, so I attempted to stop it from Task Manager.  When that didn't work I opened the command prompt and tried a taskkill command, twice.  My PC would not respond to a soft reboot after attempting the reboot three times.  I ended up having to do a hardware shutdown which definitely is not the proper way to shut down a PC.  When I powered up the computer afterward my Norton Security software detected a virus in the .exe file associated with OC.  I had to go into Norton and manually restore it from quarantine and white list it.  I had to do that twice before being able to finally get into OC.  I sure hope that future OC updates won't casue the same headaches as this one did.  I am running Windows 10 Home Edition, by the way.

From Kyle Rodgers (Feb 2, 2017):

"Go into your Program Files (x86)\PMDG Operations Center\ folder and delete everything EXCEPT the Operations Center Updater.exe. Then run the Updater.exe, and then run the OC. That should fix the issue.

Run the updater as an administrator."

Cheers.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and I installed the OC Update two days ago, and it installed flawlessly and I did not have the issues you experienced. Nor did it flag up as having a virus.

Hope it is all running okay now.

Michael,

It has been my personal experience that Norton is a horrendous piece of software that creates more problems than it solves.  Sorry it appears to have created trouble for you...  The advice Tony offered is the best advice to follow.

Yep agreed - the mass market AV programs are arguably malware themselves at this point with how much negative effect they have on system performance, false positives and overzealous heuristics-scanning, etc.

Use common sense online and in your email (don't open obviously illegitimate crap) and use the default Windows Defender that comes with Win10. Make exclusions for your sim folders, etc. I do not get malware/viruses with this method and I've been doing it for a long time.

Best bet  once  you have  it  sorted is  to  exclude  the norton  from  scanning  your  fsx  drive  and  when  downloading and  installing  addons  is  to disable  norton,
