New Build Please Look Over

Recommended Posts

Getting close to full time retirement, looking to build a nice system for 64bit PD3v4 and "maybe" FSX.

I have built 4 systems over the past 12 years. Been out of the tech loop for the past few years. Need to make sure I'm not going to run into any issues here. There was a notice in the build that the M.2 would use one of the PCI lanes. No problem. I should be all set with the 1TB M.2 and the Evo 1TB SSD. I'm thinking of replacing the two case fans with more quite fans and putting the other three on top to vent air. Remove the drive cages and place the SSD onthe back of the MB plate. Should provide good space in the case. I would rather not "M"uck with water cooling if I can go with premium air.

Any suggestions or comments would be most welcomed. Hopefully I have not screwed this up.

Thanks for any feedback. It is apprecaited!

P.S. I might give OCing a go this time around. Never tried before.

You have definitely not screwed this up.  That is a very high end system.  You may even wish to upgrade now to a full 4k monitor--you'll have the horsepower necessary and then some.

If you are planning in the future to overclock the cpu, you may wish to substitute an all in one water cooling system, such as those from Corsair.  I've never had a problem with them in 8 years of various models.

Enjoy your retirement--I've been at it for six months now and it's a gas

Forever indebted to the late Michael Greenblatt of FSGS.

Hi Folks,

Yeah - if this build is on par with your past builds - it's truly a waste NOT to OC it... You're buying a Maserati and driving it like a Yugo... Clock speed is your best avenue to increase frame rates... Most modern mobo's make it pretty simple - on my Gigabyte it's down to one parameter if you want a simple OC... Would highly recommend trying it... I prefer the Noctua air coolers - I've read reports where they get better temps than many of the water cooled units - but you need a great deal of space as they are quite large... I've also replaced all my case fans with Noctua as it makes them pretty quiet... Best of luck with your beast...

Honestly - once you get P3D setup and working properly - there's no going back...

The Noctua cooler in my cart for a new build in the near future:

Thank you for the feedback. Most appreciated. I believe you have convinced be to dive right into a 32” 4K monitor now. I’m going to start ordering parts and clearing out space in the office, as this will be a 2nd computer dedicated just to flying. Maybe some small video YouTube work, but not much.

Since I have not been flying for nearly two years I’m considering taking the small amount of work data off the 500G SSD drive I’m using now and installing FSX Steam on it. My Win10 C drive is a 128G SSD. I have an additional 1T data mechanical drive. It could take 4 to 6 weeks to reconfigure my office (wife involved triples the time) for the second flightsim computer, build the computer I want. Then add some cockpit enhancements such as some instrumentation from GoFlight, TrackIR etc. It will never really get done, I’m sure. I can then begin to fly, become familiar with some new aircraft since I left two years ago, notably the Manfred Jahn C47, and begin to get the flying and software addon braincells functioning again.

My biggest issue is an input device. I’m thinking I might just buy a Logitech yoke to fly with for the next month or two as this all comes together. Won’t be optimal, but it will get me going while I build and rearrange. I really dislike, and have a rule against, mixing flightsim software with home, personal and work stuff. But if I keep the entire FSX and all addons in the dedicated SSD drive, it should work.

I’m even second guessing the cheap joystick choice now. I’ve spent some time over at Digital Combat Simulator and various Youtube videos showing the A10C Warthog and the Black Shark 2. I spent a few very frustrating years with Jane’s Longbow Apache a while back. I hear the sweetness of sirens voices singing in my ears…. Come on in… the water’s just fine! Maybe a better quality joystick now, just in case….

Cheers,

I would probably make different choices with the storage, fans, and CPU cooling, but otherwise it's a good build.  The 840 Evo is a discontinued product, you're paying $300 for a 500GB drive that's 3-4 years old when you could pay only $180 for a newer version of the same drive https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147373

You don't need to pay $38 per fan.  That's just absurd.  They're just case fans, you're not going to gain any performance no matter what fan type you use.  Get something in the $15-20 range and save the money.  With 140mm fans acting as case fans and controlled by the motherboard, you're never going to hear them anyway so there's literally no reason to buy super expensive "quiet" fans for case fans.

Also, are you sure you need a 1TB secondary SSD?  Are you going to be installing lots of photo scenery or just every flight sim known to man?  A fully-loaded sim with tons of Orbx scenery and more add-on planes and airports than you can shake a stick at only takes up about 200GB.

Once u have used a 4k monitor there is no going back.  I use a Corsair 110i cooler and love it.  Just the space savings inside the case alone make it worth it.  Also consider delidding the CPU and replacing the junk factory paste with liquid ultra.  I am overclocked to 5ghz on a 7700K and temps stay in the mid to high 60's under full load.

I did decide to water cool the CPU with a Corsair closed system. I will mount it on the front of the case and have two 140mm fans throwing the hot air out the top. Seems to be the way to go.

I got the fans because they run at about 16db, much more quiet than the 35db cheapies. I really can hear the difference. i will replace the two fans that came with the case too. Personal preference I guess.

Cheers,

Did you catch the bit about not wasting your money on a 3-4 year old DISCONTINUED SSD?  You want to spend more money than is necessary on fans, it's your money.  But at least listen to me when I tell you not to waste $120 on a slower, older SSD.

As Max said, the 840 is outdated, it's the 850 Evo you want. I have one in my rig and just installed one in my daughters ITX rig.

Re the Noctua, I would recommend you look at the NHD-15S. The "S" variant is the newer high compatibility version of the D15. It has an offset design so as to be further away from the uppermost PCIe slot and in addition has much better RAM compatibility.

It has just one fan but important to remember that the difference between one fan and two is only 2 degrees. plus you have the clips to install a second fan if you insist.

The D15S is the cooler I use and has no issue at all with overclocks (4.6 - 4.8) and is so quiet I never hear it.

Thank you gentlemen, I did end up ordering the 850 EVO rather than the 840. Did not update the list, along with the cooler. Ended up with a ROG Maximum IX Hero 270 rather than the Code. Found more resources and appears to be a bit easier software to OC. Simple disagreement about the fans... just a pet peeve of mine. I try for as quiet as I can get. I do believbe there are very distinct differences in fans out there. Each to his own.

Appreciate the comments.... thanks.

I agree. There are indeed distinct differences between fans. I always go for Noctua, not just because the noise/performance ratio is good but because when they are running at a higher RPM the "quality" of the sound is better.

What do you like about the Dark Rock Pro 3 so much? I'd go for the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. Definitely go for the Evo 850 SSD as one of your storage options, not the 840. I thought the 960 Evo uses 4 PCIe lanes???
