X-plane 11 Native VR support comming!

Recommended Posts

Really promising and I love to see how VR as well as flight simulation in general seems to become more and more a very hot topic.

Can't wait.  The only way to fly!  If you havent tried VR yet be very careful, you will never want to fly in 2d again.

So very true!

I actually tried going back to 2D twice but unsuccessfully both times 😁

The only reason I am kind of dubious is that I have tried VR in both XPlane11 and P3DV3 + 4, and found the framerates far below what's needed for comfortable VR.

I'm not at all sure what LM can do about that, and don't think we will see much improvement from LR either, until they complete their conversion to Vulkan.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I guess it depends on what your favorite flavor of aircraft is. If you like spining around in an F15 then yeah its not great, however chugging along in a little single engine is fine for me (even rendering in 4k). I am not a long haul fan but i would imagine in a 747 you don't see much except the cockpit and above cloud sky, which again should be fine. If you are a top gun in waiting then DCS is really the way to go in VR atm.

However, what ever the view... I would rather have the VR now and wait for the performance tweaks than no VR at all.

I fully agree.

More than once when I first got my VR glasses I thought to myself...

"Maybe I should skip this first generation and wait for the second or even third generation"

...but I then thought if everyone would think like that there most probably wouldn't be any next generations and I'm honestly happy to "sponsor" the future of VR because I think it's absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see what flight simulation will be like in a couple of years.

To me what is happening right now both in regards to VR but also the development of various flight simulator platforms in general, the transition to 64-bit etc etc means great things are ahead of us!

I've seen that too but I don't find it very surprising considering the huge numbers of people who own a mobile phone or a console vs the number of people who own a computer where they are doing anything else but work, pay their bills and surf the web.

Would be interesting to see the same diagram but without VR included in the picture. I'm guessing the relation would be quite similar.

If the Porn Industry pushes VR, it will take off rapidly. Just saying...VHS.

VR technology is advancing, as is the market. But most of the market is on consoles and smartphones.

I am not sure of the relavence? Undoubtedly PC VR is the expensive powerful end of VR. Therefore you will get lower sales compared to the cheaper end. In fact on the same basis you could argue that the future of P3D running at high resolution on flat screen monitors is in doubt if you compare the sales of really high end graphic cards Versus the cheaper low end alternatives!

1) The Porn industry is already flooding VR, just google Redit Oculus rift NSFW!

2) I was too young at the time but i knew someone with a real unhealthy amount of smut on Video 2000

The relevance is that the consoles and phone markets advance the technology at a faster rate than the declining desktop PC sector. I almost bought the PS4 VR, but after testing one out, the low resolution is still a big drawback. In another year or two, these concerns will be eliminated.

I am not sure what you think that the mobile market is advancing at a faster rate? From what I see, when you compare a samsung / Apple 5 to the latest models there is very little difference except slight higher res screens / processor. In the case of Samsung they then slotted into a slightly more expensive headset than google cardboard and wrote an app that splits the screen 50/50. PS4 VR is popular for core gaming (which are well written to hide the fact that it is lacking the raw power needed for high polygon VR).

When you look at the hardware needed to get the raw power, resolution and framerates in P3D there is no way you are going to do that anywhere else other than a PC. A mobile would have to increase in power 100 fold. It just isn't going to happen any time soon. Even if you just look at the heat sinks that are required for a top end i7 + 1080TI you would re-invent the laws of thermal dynamics to put that kind of power into anything small + You would need to bolt on a car battery for 15mins run time.

As far as graphics go. My Rift is running at 4k. I have absolutely no real problem with the image quality I am getting. The only major limitations I currently see are the dated legacy graphics in the Sim itself. Hopefully, native 4K VR screens will be with us soon. When they are only PC VR will be able to push the quality

I said technology. If the market for the desktop is a small fish in a big pond, then VR technology advances will be focused on where the market if the most lucrative. And that certainly isn't the desktop. The desktop these days tends to be showcase for hardware companies, but they know that consoles and phones are where the money is. Just wait until a 4K console hits the market with a viable 4K VR headset.
