ILS approaches dont follow glideslope

Good Day,

I have xplane 11 and am trying to do ils approaches using the 10NM feature.

AP,Nav, and Appr are configured on default Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Every time I line up with glideslope, my plane goes left or right and will not follow. I am using xplane 530 for setup.

Do I need to load Navigraph to make this work. 

Any advice would be appreciated.

Did you setup CDI button on 530 correctly? Does it shows GPS or VLOC?

In order for airplane to make ILS approach you have to:

1) Set correct ILS frequency

2) Be on intercept heading for localizer

3) Set GNS530 to VLOC (CDI button)

4) Intercept glideslope from  below

Can you fly an ILS by hand using a chart? Not trying to be a smart alec. Just trying to gauge your familiarity with this type of approach.

Do you mean the localizer? You track a glideslope vertically, not horizontally.

Thanks for the reply. I have done all of the above and still no luck.

Let me show my setup:

1. GPS to NAV

2. Set AP and NAV and APPR on panel.

3.Open map and pick pick runway with ILS approach at 10 NM out.

4. Click on GS (turns yellow) and then tune NAV1.

5. Plane flies towards GS, picks up NAV1 and starts to descend.

Once inside the yellow band the plane will go left or right radically and miss runway by quite a bit. I am beginning to think the default Cessna or xplane 11 has a bug that has to be addressed,

I am using the full version and not the demo.

You have to establish on localizer before tracking glideslope

I don't know what do you mean  "click on GS". GS indicator comes alive when correct ILS frequency is selected and you tracking localizer. If not GS hasto be "flagged" which mean there is no signal

My understanding is that you trying to do GPS approach not ILS. If you want to do ILS the source of you navigation on GNS530 should be set to VLOC and ILS frequency should be  set to NAV1, IN turn NAV1 should be set to final approach course.  After that autopilot should track both lateral and vertical navigation up to the certain point. After that you take over and land manually. I believe that default Cessna is not equipped with "autoland" autopilot. So say 1000 ft AGL would be a nice point to disconnect autopilot and continue to minimums by hands.

If you want to practice ILS approaches in US, i'd recommend to go to specific airport and using www.airnav.com download approach plate.  In my experience XP matches real ILS frequencies in 99% of cases

Hi sd_flyer,

It appears that the paid version of xplane 11 has a bug for the default Cessna that they are working on it.

So until I hear from Laminar, I will put the approach practice on the shelf.

 Im very well aware of that. However he doesn't mention the localizer at all so it can't be assumed that he even knows the difference between a localizer and a glideslope.

Glideslopes and localizers are two very different things he typed "glideslope." That right there looks as if he doesn't understand the difference between the two.

It's typed out as if he's confused. But whatever.

Well, there is always an inspiration to learn something new. At least he became aware of two different things  that important for instrument approach.
