Hello to all fellow flight sim enthusiasts,

Im new to this forum. Also am considered a rookie when it comes to flight sims. Only starting out. I am using a relatively basic machine to run FSX but it runs ok. I could give the exact specs if anyone would be generous enough to advise me on what settings to run the game on.

Thanks to all,

Safe flying

Hi and welcome.

The short answer with FSX is that its best to run it on the settings you are happy with, however, the smart thing to do where that is concerned, is to literally put every single slider and option on the bare minimum, then crank up a flight and hit shift+Z to get the frame rate counter showing. Then, gradually kick in option various sliders until it hits the point where you ain't happy with the performance, and then you'll know the sweet spot. Be aware though, that some settings might affect others, but as a general approach to getting it running to your satisfaction, that's a good one to try.

It's also worth noting that the Steam edition of FSX runs a bit better than the older boxed Microsoft version, and the Steam one is currently on sale at a discount (£9.99 as opposed to its normal £22.99), so if you are running the older boxed Microsoft version, and not the Steam version, it's a good time to switch because of that price drop.

Check out the latest AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide for the "best" settings used by most.  See the link in my signature or on the right under Hot Spots.

And, welcome to AVSIM!

Best regards,

Jim

Welcome to Avsim Padder86.

I'll give you just a small advice: find out a good compromise between performance and "eye candy" and don't waste more time tweaking. Remember, both performance and beauty depends on you hardware and software together. A lot of people spend more time tweaking than enjoying a game!

Have fun above all,

Cheers

Welcome to Avsim mate. I'm from just up the road, about 10 miles north of Drogheda. Just outside "Ardee, Hey!".

Thanks for the informative replies. And a big hello to a fellow Irishman "nealmac".

Ive found a happy medium now between performance and graphics. Graphics aint great but the game feels alot smoother. Think its time to upgrade my system.
