LAGO Twin Otter -- Bad Flight Dynamics?

Recommended Posts

Guest byoung

Decided to dust off the Twin Otter and pulled her out of the hangar. Then I realized why I put her in to begin with! The rudder dynamics don't turn the plane very well while taxiing. Then on a water landing I skimmed back up into the air after touchdown. Anyway, unless this is the way the real life A/C flies. But just basic dynamics, I doubt it. The sinkrate on the plane appears to be over-sensitive. Back to the hangar. Any other more commercial type twin amphibs that anyone can recommend?Barry

It is below par. Barely slows down with its flaperons fully deployed. FPS drops like a stone with the yoke displayed. I can't remember the full list of complaints it was FS2002 when I last bothered with it which probably explains why I didn't find the specific problems you have noted.

I can answer one of them:"The rudder dynamics don't turn the plane very well while taxiing."That's because the aircraft (the amphib at least, the others are conventional IIRC) turns using differential power and brakes. There is no link to the rudders from the nose wheels on the floats.I've also just reinstalled it and it is well behind the curve these days but if I remember correctly, didn't the developer vanish soon after release, so any patches were work arounds done by people other than the original author?Ian P.

I cannot remember exactly which ones. But there are some excellent freeware versions of the Twotter out there. You could e.g. combine the airfile with Lago's visuals. Or simply get rid of the Lago plane. The Lago Twotter really had the worst flight charateristics I have ever experienced on a payware aircraft. Turns like a fighter, floats like an ultralight :-).Alex

Check out the freeware EDA Twotter, its very well done with excellent exterior, inerior cabin & VC. Im not a real-life Twotter driver so I dont know about the FDE but this is a *very* nice addon for the sim!http://www.e-d-aviation.com/twin_otter_fic...s/Image1442.jpg http://www.e-d-aviation.com/twin_otter_fic...s/Image1439.jpg http://www.e-d-aviation.com/twin_otter_fic...s/Image1445.jpg http://www.e-d-aviation.com/twin_otter_fic...s/Image1434.jpg http://www.e-d-aviation.com/twin_otter_fic...s/Image1438.jpgGet it here (Download links are under "T

same here. Tried a lot of them, none come close to Lago's model and FDE.

The Lago model and panel are my choice in FS, but the flight dynamics are truly horrid. As a point of reference, Lago initially released the Twin Otter with a renamed exact duplicate of the MSFS default King Air .air file, and there were a couple of abortive attempts to fix it after that. IMHO, the FDE were an afterthought and Igor Supranov, the developer, quickly pulled a disappearing act, leaving a long trail of broken promises w/r/t this product. A vanished developer combined with Lago's awful customer support are the very definition of lose-lose.My solution was to merge the Lago model with some FDE written by Steve Small for the Premier Aircraft Design freeware Twotter for FS2K2.Steve Small objected to having his freeware FDE work used to prop up a defective payware product, so out of respect for those wishes I won't go into details on the merge, other than to say it can be done if you take the time to learn some FDE basics. The 2K2 FDs need a bit more tweaking for differences in the FS2004 flight dynamics engine as well.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Santiago de Chile
