Photoscenery loading in V4

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering about the actual process P3D uses to load photoscenery.

Typically I have CA, AZ, NV and WA checked. The size of those states exceeds (or close to exceeding) my physical memory.

What's occurring as I'm waiting to load? Does P3D know where I've placed my AC and is loading that region/state? Are the states writing to the pagefile?

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Mark

Photoscenery loads all of the files whether you are using the photoscenery or not.  If you flight is in the USA and you have photoscenery enabled in Europe, the European scenery will load during your flight in the USA.  The loading takes up system resources and slows things down.  I once had 40 US MSE States enabled and it took over 20 minutes for them to load.  It caused my aircraft to turn black.  I could barely run my PC.

Be careful as there is some airport and region scenery, like WashX, that uses photoscenery too.  I believe some of the FTX regions have photoscenery too.  So be very careful what you have enabled in your scenery.cfg.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks Jim

Using AIDA64, even when I have all those states loaded, memory never exceeds ~6GB/pagefile=0 so I'm wondering where/how much of those areas are loaded?

As in my original post, I don't think the complete state is being loaded; would definitely exceed the 6GB shown.

Cheers,

Mark

After all my years of simming, I never knew that. Interesting.

Jim is absolutely right.

When using photoscenery ( I use photscenery only ) just enable regions you fly over. Others disabled.

Hi Howard.  The suggestion is also in all of the PMDG Intro Guides (so you are not reading those manuals?)  LOL!  After I had my issues with loading 40 plus photoscenery, I reported it here in the forums and, soon thereafter, it was in the PMDG Guides too.  In 64-bit V4, it is certainly not going to wipe out your VAS but it will use an extraordinary amount of resources while the photoscenery around the world is loaded.  It may account for reported black buildings, AI, objects, and autogen during some flights.

Best regards,

Jim

Gerard-

Do you have any .cfg additions in V4 to facilitate PS loading? Not initially, but during flight.

Thanks,

Mark

AM = 340 ( 6 core 5820 )

Some settings :

LOD = Ultra ( = 5.5 ) to see the same sharpness as in V3 with High ( = 4.5 )

Effects = Off

Car/boat traffic = Off

Airport vehicles = Minimum

Autogen = Normal ( bad weather ) - Dense ( fair weather )
