Meigs Field GONE????

Recommended Posts

Guest bwales

I flew into Chicago (real commercial flight) and as it was a very clear day, I looked out the window to enjoy the real life scenery, but as we passed Meigs Field, it wasn't there!!!! The land mass was there, but there was no runway visible, just dirt. Did they close this field down? Is it closed just for the winter? Anybody who lives in Chicago know what happened? I grew up in Chicago, but haven't been back for years. If it's not there anymore, Microsoft needs to update the Chicago scenery files. Thanks,Bruce

I think it was 6-8 months ago, (correct me if I am wrong), that The Mayor of Chicago, instructed crews of bulldozers and graders to go into Meigs at night, and rip up the runways to make Meigs non functional. They did leave one taxiway so that light aircraft which were still at the field could take off one last time.Do a google search and I'm sure you will find Meigs closing, it's been a running battle in Chicago for a few years now, the government wanting to close it along with some developers, and the flying public wanting it to stay open . . . bottom line is, the Govt. won!Best,Clayhttp://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. Hi Bruce,It has been closed down for over a year now. It got torn up in the middle of the night. Some planes had to take off from the taxi ways. The fine mayor thought it was a security risk. Look for it to be no more in the next version of FS.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg

Basically the mayor and a gang with bulldozers went out and vandalized the field in the middle of the night. All in the name of national security.Only in America.

WOW I didnt think anyone could have missed that one. There were numerous articles and threads in the forums for weeks after the closing.

I am not sure, but I though I read, that although the mayor gave the order for removal, it was really his wife who was the one behind the airfields destruction.

Guess I've been living in a fool's paradise. Feel kind of sad. Oh well, change is part of life, I guess. Some things about Chicago haven't changed since I grew up there. The Mayor (Richard J. Daley, at the time) ruled with an iron fist. We always tried to look on the bright side. At least the streets were always plowed. Guess they got carried away with the plowing.Best to all,Bruce

The Mayor of Chigaco is a bottom feeding criminal. I feel sorry for any decent citizen living under his rule.

It is sad. http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2003/03-1-157x.htmlthat website shows the damage done to it about a year ago. I remember my first flights on Flight Simulator out of Meigs. I also hated that #### Microsoft Blimp that hovered over the stadium next to it. Anyone remember in FS2000 I think where they had the moving cars (glowing dots that moved) on the roads there?

<> With respect...no he didn't. He wants to put a park there and he wants to put a park there so that there can be more concessions that the city can license and take a piece of the action on...if not bribes to get the concession which has been known to happen on occasion in Chicago. And oh, yeah...what a perfect place for Chicago's first "water based" gambling casino.wink wink...nudge nudge....(:

That does a disservice to bottom feeders as they are making a life for themselves as they have done for many millions of years. Politicians on the other hand,in every country and of every persuasion, are just self-important, self-serving, money grabbing, loathsome creatures of our own creation. Unfortunately for the rest of us our best intentions for society bring out the slimy and the lazy and then we vote for them!!Anyway here's a simple picture which shoes us the magic of flight sim and why we don't bother too much with politicians. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/106928.jpg
