i9 7900X vs. i7 5960X - P3D V4 performance results 85% FPS increase

Recommended Posts

Well, after some tests and updating the bios (again), P3Dv4 works good, like the setup of Rob ( thank you Rob for the Video !).

FPS between 20-30, CPU Temp max 71C, with no OC, only XMP and Intel TB MAX 3.0

Let's hope LM will optimze the multicore work for P3Dv4 in the upcoming versions.

I am also interested how XP11 will be benefit from CPUs with 8 Core+ in the upcoming Vulcan update.

When the times come, I am ready for Take off !
Benny

Smart thinking Michael.

I have a 5820K running at 4.3 Ghz HT on. Will do some tests with Core 0 at 4.5 Ghz and the others at 4.2 Ghz to see what that brings...

Hi,

Wonder why my CPU temps are higher on Core 3+4 rather than my OC on Core 1+2 ?? (ghz 49-48-46-45) (temp 68-65-78-72)

IS it the other way around or is Core 0 the same as Core 1 in Bios ?

This is with the NGX

Thanks

Michael Moe

Are you using an affinity mask?  Is HT enabled?

Out of curiosity, does this happen with an overclocking load test tool (like Realbench) also. My 3570K core 1 runs hot. I assumed this was a production issue. Possibly you're seeing a similar problem.

I am not sure. Loading cold and dark and the temp is about 50-50-40-33.But up and running is the other way around. At least with the NGX.

Just did a whole flight EKCH - EDDF with very heavy weather and windshear on approach to 25L and temp was up to 70-70-80-75 with a Max at 83c on  core 3.

Butter smooth btw.

I've been intensively hesitating last days between a skylake x (7820X) and a kabylake (7700K) build. I have budget for both platforms and was pretty sure to go the skylake x route (i was waiting for the Rog rampage Apex/extreme to be available) but in the last minute switched to kabylake with a good mobo (ix formula) for my present needs and upgrade to coffee lake when the platform is mature enough with good selection of motherboards and binned cpus (guess next year). I am coming from a 4790K + 1080 ti + 8gb ram + win7, which was quite limit in Vr in p3Dv4 (Ram and windows 7 were limiting factor here, oculus running optimally in win10. I was also feeling my gpu to be  bottlenecked). I needed a new build today and so was my experience...Although having already ordered the parts i am still checking the availability of the rog Apex and extreme though

Thanks,

Sweisma has answered, there are a couple but the der8aur Diemate x is the best made because it provides the leverage required to delid the 7900x. You dont want a poorly made tool on a $1000 processor.

This video shows it fairly well

Still no one with 1950X?

Since some weeks I am analyzing the situation. 4 variants are always on top. 7700K, 8700K, 1950X, 7900X.

I saw what 7900X can do in the Rob's videos and is quite good. I saw different benchmarks and for single threaded applications 7700K is quite good still, 7900X is matching, and 8700K will be probably also there.

http://www.legitreviews.com/intel-core-i7-8700k-coffee-lake-cpu-benchmarks-leaked-cinebench-cpu-z_197631

But as I see the things, developers need to go now more and more towards multi-thread on their applications, as both Intel and AMD increase the cores number.

As I do not use the PC only for P3D but run many different other things in parallel, sometimes also streaming, and my budget permits at the moment, I am thinking to choose between 7900X and 1950X. 8700K will not be better than 7900X in my opinion, not to mention the fact that I will not see Intel to compete between them...Will kill their 7900X sales.  Then, 6 cores against 10 cores will lead also to the fact that again, applications will need to step up to use them.

Other aspect, power consumption and CPU usage seems lower for the 1950X, which is also due to lower frequency.

Intel rush with X299 is also a minus (VRMs, temperatures, thermal paste inside).

People reports also higher fps for 7900X in games (saw 10-20 fps more, over 150fps)  but smoother experience with the 1950X...

At the end, taking into account that a processor is bought for the next 2-3 years (in average) and developers will start to optimize more their applications and games for multi core / threading...

I tend to take the risk for a 1950X (now I have a 4790K, EVGA 1080 TI FTW3, 4K monitor set at 30Hz to get stable 30 fps). When the applications will take into account the AMD too, it might come into its favor over the 7900X, as the clock speed will be less relevant.

All in all, not an easy decision, clearly.

Competition is good, so I would encourage people to get AMD CPUs.  But if you want the best "gaming" and single thread performance, Intel still has the advantage.

Keep in mind this is base clock testing, from what I've seen AMD 1950X caps out at about 4.1Ghz (on water cooling), Intel 7900X caps out around 5Ghz (on water cooling).  The 900 Mhz advantage Intel, Single thread performance advantage Intel, Less heat advantage AMD, PCIe lanes advantage AMD.

I haven't seen anyone quantify what "smoother" means in terms of time frame data, so don't really know.

Cheers, Rob.

Just for P3D, the 1950X is about 20% slower than 4790K in single core performance, so expect a similar drop in raw FPS.

IMHO, you will be downgrading. (I went from 4790K to 7900X).

Dit you see a 80%+ increase in framerate like Rob ?
