i9 7900X vs. i7 5960X - P3D V4 performance results 85% FPS increase

Well, I had 2 fps more as average

Don't chase FPS ... you want to chase away long frames and try to herd time frames to be more consistent (it's the inconsistency of time frames that makes stutters).  Reducing cores might hinder terrain/mesh LOD (aka blurries) and/or other CPU intensive tasks like AI traffic, road traffic, boat traffic, aircraft systems, etc. etc.

A lot of people try to paint a broad brush, it just can't be done ... you either target worst case or work a compromise (this is true of any FS platform).

DL performance varies based on aircraft and scenery ... for example FB's KSFO HD V2 makes extensive use of lights that work with DL and with careful planning the airport is extremely good on performance front.  Other DL enabled airports are not so good in their application of DL type lights and performance is very poor ... so it really depends on the airport dev/designer and your mileage will vary.

I'm not aware of any DL performance changes in P3D V4.x now or planned.  But if your GPU is pegged at 100% then you'll need to reduce your AA settings (use MSAA or something else).

Cheers, Rob.

Really? I thought 4.1 was addressing the DL fps issues.

True, that was only what I noticed. It was though smoother also. And I agree, it comes with some blurry at distance. I do not use AI, is installed just for my Vatsim flights.

Regarding DL, as mentioned, 747 PMDG, all lights ON, at EDDF professional, night time.

I tried to reduce the AA settings but still I do not understand why on other systems with the 1080TI people say that they can get till 4xSSAA and DL without capping at 100%. On my side even I limit frames at 31 (Vsync OFF) or reduce to 4xMSAA it is still 99-100%. If I turn OFF some lights of the 747, then it starts to decrease.

My 4.1 excitement just died.

@Rob
Hello Rob, have you already updated your BIOS to 0802.
I use now DDR4@2667Mhz and ! 10x4Ghz CPU, cooler is a Corsair H100v2, CPU Temp max 70C in P3Dv4 with HT on, 60C with HT off, system is absolutely stable.

( my second Gameing - PC with i7 7700k (no OC, intel TS13X cooler) runns up to 72C, in games like GTA4)

I am very happy now with my FS PC.

Have a nice weekend ! :)

The only question is, do we need HT for P3Dv4 and XP11 ?, Temps are better with HT off, that is fact !

After days and days of reading, analyzing and so on I decided for the 7900X (and ordered for 914 euros) instead of 1950X. And that because that is the reality, Intel still has some advantage for the sim, even if I like more the 1950X, its quality and potential (perhaps the hype too), I can not contest the facts regarding P3D at the moment. And 10 cores will be enough for the coding, streaming and other stuff.

Interesting comparison, for BF1 (as for P3D there is not one), when gaming and OBS is used:

7900X (100% CPU, around 3.7Ghz)

1950X (~60% CPU, around 3.5Ghz)

7700K vs 7900X vs 1950X (frame time is interesting)

I am not sure about OBS, but it seems terribly un-optimized.

For reference I play BF1 in 7680x2160 resolution and use Bandicam to record, my CPU usage is hardly 40%. (7900X with 2x1080Ti SLI). So thats at 8x pixel count compared to the test in the video.

BTW, good choice to land up with 7900x.

Anyone have a guess as to how the Coffee Lake chips that will be released in October will stack up.  6 cores / 12 threads.  4.3 Ghz and 12MB Cache ?  Apparently the top chip, i7 8700K will sell for around $350 USD.

And what will be L2 and L3 Cache of i7 8700K? I'll have to deside between 8700K and 7900x in November. I hope a delidding tool will be available for both by then.

Thanks,

Thanks,

8700K, L2 cache 1.5 MB (256 KB per Core), L3 cache 12 MB.

7900X, L2 cache 10MB (1MB per Core), L3 cache 13.75MB.

Thanks, Vali. Now, from the discussion above, can L2 cache size be a decisive factor in P3D/FltSim performance? Is 10MB L2 cache much better than 1.5MB  L2 cache for flight simming?

Well, L2 cache is more or less private to the core and as P3D is running more intensive on one core at the moment, might help... L3 is shared between the cores and also with some other devices, at 4790K (my case) and probably at 8700K also with the integrated GPU in the processor (if used).

See the article also here: https://www.extremetech.com/computing/55662-top-tip-difference-between-l2-and-l3-cache

Good deal - sticking with the i7700 for the near future.

i9 7900X sounds like a great winner P3D-wise over previous and coming Intel series, though quite an expensive one. The large L2 cache might well be the main reason for that, so looks like there are no less expensive shortcuts coming our way next 6 months at least.

Dirk.
