I'm receiving a spam regularly - offers, phishing emails etc. I was able to track some of them. If you are absolutely sure they are from Steam, just talk to them. I do have an email linked to my virtual Visa card, becouse of this. This is where i receive all that spam, and i don't bother with it

How do I "talk to them"? Do you have a UK phone number preferably not a premium rate line?

Neil,

I'm not sure how it can be a scam when the email comes from [email protected]. That is a genuine Steam address.

Still not heard back from them. Unless I hear by 09:00 tomorrow morning they will be getting a reminder. I detest these places where it's easy to register but not to de-register.

You're right. I never noticed that it was a genuine address. However, something is still very iffy in my circumstance, as it's being sent to my secondary email, which is not linked to Steam. I use my primary email for Steam.

Best regards,

Okay but please explain how I can only gain access using the 5 digit code in the email?

For that specific e-mail, sure - my point was for the general case that origin e-mail addresses provide no guarantee that the sender is genuine.

Cheers!

Luke, you do have an element of truth in that as I received what looked a very genuine email from my ISP claiming my subscription payment had not gone through, and my Internet would be cut off. Fortunately, I made a call to their service desk and discovered it was a scam,

Indeed. I've seen spam email in my BT spam folder purporting to come from my own email address. But once you hover over the sender's link the real address is shown and it's not mine.

The easiest way to spot spam is where you are addressed as Dear XXxxx where XXxxx is the first part of your email address before the @.

Probably OT and irrelevant but... what does GPS-Z (did you mean GPU-Z...?) and Steam have to do with each other...? And why do you have a Steam account if you haven't bought anything there? Just curious.

Yes, I did mean GPU-Z, the utility that monitors your graphics card performance. There is an option in it to feedback data and to compare with other similar systems. I elected to do that and provided my email address and a password. At no time did I see any reference to creating a Steam account otherwise I would have backed out. It all appears rather murky presumably to suck you in.

Regarding cancelling my account I have had three replies from Steam support asking me to confirm I am aware of the ramifications of cancelling. Despite stating in no uncertain terms that I do they still reply asking for more info which I am unable to give as I don't have a credit card registered with them.

Let this be a warning to anyone else who wants to terminate their Steam account. They really don't make it easy even when you've spent no money with them. I really don't like organisations like this. Be aware of what you're letting yourself into when you register.

Sorry to hear your woes with Steam continue and a great warning, Ray.Thankfully, once I have made the complete and total move over to P3Dv4, I can ditch them and close my account with them for good. Salutary lesson, indeed.

Cheers Rick. I'm just thankful my credit card details aren't logged with them. There's no personal info held by them apart from my name and email address. But it's the principle that's important. They should not be so damned frustrating when the customer has made it abundantly clear they want to close the account.

They suck. And will lose customers with this kind of behaviour.

Finally! After multiple requests they have finally sprung crawled into action and terminated my account.

Per your request, your Steam account has been terminated. Any related community content has been removed and you will no longer be able to log into or make use of the account.

Whoopee !! A result, at last. I wonder if they'd taken note of this thread and 'crawled' into action??

I doubt it Rick. Large organisations like that don't really concern themselves with the complaint from one individual. Let this be a warning to any others wishing to close their Steam account.

After all this bad news I'd like to say I absolutely LOVE Steam and never had any problems with it in any way. In fact, I only have very positive experiences (like with instant refunds, no questions asked). Obviously I didn't yet try to cancel my account LOL What I do find the oddest thing here is that registering GPU-Z results in a Steam account... That is very weird and makes no sense.

BTW I think it is a good thing there is no simple 'delete account' option because an account contains ALL purchases you do on Steam. I wouldn't be happy if my account got hacked and the hacker could delete it just like that...! Deleting an Instagram or Facebook account is easier, yes, but clearly doesn't have such far reaching consequences. I also like how Steam clearly counters probable hacks and informs you by email. Nothing bad about that. And finally, your account did get deleted within two days or so. Not too bad for such a HUGE company that has millions of users. I know smaller companies that take longer. ;)

Jeroen,

It appears unlikely but it's the only way I could have created a Steam account. I've never seen those messages about a potential compromise of my account until after I used the GPU-Z utility and supplied my email address.

Each to their own. I only fly with P3D so have no need for Steam. It wasn't the fact they took  3 days but the multiple messages asking for info I couldn't provide. They seem go go through a standard process instead of applying a bit of common sense.
