How on earth do you get enough frame rate to make VR flying not a total stutter slide show?

My solution is to use Aerofly, which is faster in VR than most other sims in 2D!

The other solution is to turn your settings down pretty much to minimum, with maybe a few tweaks, and accept things as they are for now. At least that's the way I see it after trying VR in all the other sims with the capability.

Well..... DCS is very nice too, as is War Thunder.

I get the same performance in VR and using the same settings as when using my 4K 2D screen thanks to the FlyInside software.

Zero stutters with the FPS rarely going lower than 90.

I've tried this both in P3D and XP.

You can read more about this and how FlyInside allows this kind of performance using some very clever technology I forgot the name of.

Asynchronous timewarp, and it has a tough job, in this case.

Maybe I missed what this case is but in my case flying the NGX in P3Dv3.2 and various aircraft in XP11 I've had zero performance issues as previously mentioned.

Even with a 1080ti, I got a pretty pedestrian experience with glitchs/artifacts in fsx/p3d as I turned my head, and Xplane was too horrible to mention. The fps was just too poor to be usable, even with just moderate settings. Ymmv.

I'm sorry to hear that because I'm on a 980Ti and again with no issues so to me it seems something must have been messed up with your setup because I'm certainly not alone enjoying VR with great performance.

I think it depends on what each user is willing to lose and or put up with to get an acceptable framerate. In my case, the instructions from both Flyinside and P3D for its native solution recommended turning down graphics to their lowest settings for a smoother experience, and I found that to be very necessary advice. The problem for me was that running at such low settings left somebody (me) that was already unhappy with FSX/P3D graphics even unhappier!

Could you share your settings? I will replicate them on my machine and report back..

Quote

To tune FlyInside a three-step process is recommended

Turn down all graphics settings until you have performance you are really happy with

Turn up resolution until you have crispness you are really happy with

Turn up the graphical settings you care about most, until you have a good balance between smoothness, crispness, and visual fidelity

Prepar3D

Here are some helpful hints on how to ensure quality performance when using a virtual reality headset:

Before starting a virtual reality session, turn all of Prepar3D's graphics settings to the lowest they can be. Only increase these settings if the experience is unsatisfactory.

For Oculus Rift Only: All virtual reality sessions start in Stereo Mode which is performance intensive. Under the "Add-Ons" drop-down on the menu bar, select "Toggle Stereo." This will force Prepar3D and the Oculus Rift to render the scene once to both eyes, instead of once for each eye. (YUCK!!)

Turn off any background processes currently running that are not Prepar3D.

Below is my Prepar3D.cfg as well as my FlyInside config file minus the license stuff.

As for XP11 I'm still playing around so too early to have anything to share but I already did try VR and it performed just fine.

Bleah. I'm allergic to messing with configs these days, but I will try yours and see what happens. Thanks.

I have V3 and V4 but hopefully it should work........

You shouldn't take all of it since that will highly likely mess things up.

Just like you I don't like to mess with config files (and don't have to these days) but posted my files so you can check my settings.

Too late! I just slammed it right in der' and went for it. :emu_melk:

Smoother than I remembered, but since I was only getting 40fps with those settings in 2D, once again asynchronous Timewarp was doing yeoman service to compensate in 3D

It definitely poops all over P3D native, but while apparent FPS (and especially head turning) was now (just) within acceptable range, I was still getting the occasional artifact and glitching, and the frames were very unsteady if you checked them. But the point was, I didn't really have to check them: I could feel it.

I would say if it's all that's available, I would do it, but.......... for me it's kind of meh.

2D for P3D, 3D for Aerofly. (And DCS and WarThunder)

Hello

Me too i have to put the sliding on the right to have an acceptable experience. In big airport it can be limit..

One important setting not to forget and that can cause a very important fps drop is your clouds resolution !

More specifically if you use AS16 with ASCA ! in ASCA I put the minimum clouds resolution with overcast performance on (better than quality): it made a big difference.

I really wait to have flyinside with P3DV4 to see if we can gain few fps more..

I have been digging into things the past few days, playing with settings, and fighting with artifacts, and finally seem to have things pinned down for a fairly smooth experience in P3dV3

I think I would rather fly in FSX though. P3D always feels dark and kind of gloomy to me. FSW is much "happier"

(well except when using the new clouds and everything gets washed out)
