PMDG and Performance in FSX

Recommended Posts

I own FSX:SE I have PMDG 74v3,777,737ngx, and other add on planes and sceneries. 747 for me is by far the most heavy on performance. I have MSI GE72MVR laptop with Windows 10 64 bit, Nvidia 1070, 16GB RAM, Intel  I7700HQ, 1TB +256SD. FSX is installed onto the hard rive. I have micro stutters every time I fly the plane. But in General, does FSX: SE runs poor and lags even on high end rigs? IS it that time to switch to P3D? My settings are not even set to Ultra. Scenery and weather are set to medium.

Thank you

I get pretty bad performance considering.  The NGX is usually fine, as is all other aircraft, but the QOTSII is a taxing beast.  Why not a desktop?  No room?  If you update, just switch to P3Dv4.

I plan on it when I have to upgrade.

No its just I though having pretty good laptop can handle the FSX;SE Or is it because the engine is just too old and cannot fully utilize the new GPU and CPU

It depends on your setup. I get silky smooth performance (30 FPS, no stutters) with everything maxed, except for traffic and ground shadows. I'm currently running a i7 6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB RAM, and a GTX 1080 Ti.

Most of the reason why your GPU is barely utilized is because it's waiting for the draw calls from the CPU (which modern CPUs have no problem with). It's the API overhead that makes those draw calls expensive your GPU go to sleep. So if you had a sim that could use DX12 or Vulkan, the card would not have to wait long for work to do. Unfortunately, DX10 is the best they had to work with at the time.

How do you get silky smooth performance. What are your settings? Please share

I have better hardware. As for the fsx.cfg file, I don't tweak anything. Only a basic unmodified one.

So in this case having a better CPU is what makes a difference, and not GPU? 6700K is better than 7700HQ?

GPU still matters, as it's what renders everything you see on the screen. I used to have a lower end GPU on my older system and everything was a stuttering mess. Now, everything is smooth, regardless of how much the GPU is actually being utilized.

Ideally, you want a fast CPU and a fast GPU.

Oh yeah, the 6700K is better. Yours is a laptop, mine's a desktop. Your CPU runs at a base clock of 2.8 GHz, and turbo clocks up to 3.8 GHz. Mine runs at 4.0 GHz and turbos up to 4.2 GHz (I overclocked it to 4.5 GHz).

Well.............word not allowed lol. Brand new Laptop that is pretty expensive still cannot handle FSX but can handle brand new PC games like nothing everything Maxed Out. Maybe switching to p3dv4 will have a difference?

I doubt it. It'll get rid of those OOMs thanks to 64-bit, no autogen popping like FSX, and maybe look prettier (dynamic lighting, shadows everywhere, etc). FSX and P3D or even XPlane can't really be compared to brand new PC games, because they aren't games. They are full world simulators that render and compute way more than your average game ever does. Most of the CPU time is actually spent crunching numbers and simulating things. It's not really spent telling the GPU to render things on the screen.

There is a slimmed down simulator called Aerofly FS2. It is lacking many features that FSX, P3D and XPlane have. However, if performance is your priority (as well as running everything maxed out at a playable framerate), then you could give it a try.

Thanks for the Help Brother! So basically it comes down to buying Desktop to play FSX. Since its more powerful than even when compared to high end gaming laptops.

Or you could turn down the settings, save some money, and keep your current system. Up to you. .

How much did you spend on your rig? if its not a secret. I spent $2600 for my laptop. So not cheap, but if i buy a desktop around that price, will it be powerful enough you think?

It was around $2500 in Canadian dollars. You'll still need to make sacrifices. Like I said, I don't have everything maxed out. If I did, I'd get around 10 FPS, not 30. AI traffic is a huge performance hit.
