Can't run at 2560x1600 resolution

I have been running with my Dell 30" ultrasharp at a native resolution of 2560x1600 for the past five years. Both with a GTX 770 and then more recentl;y a GTX1070. I have, only today, installed a GTX 1080ti in preparation of a rebuild around a 4K monitor. Up until now I have used a DVI cable but with the advent of the 1080ti it offers 4 ports, two of which are HDMI. After replacing the original DVI cable with a new HDMI cable, I now find I can't run the monitor at it's native resolution of 2560x1600!!!! When I go into display properties of the control panel in Windows, it's maximum resolution is shown is 1920x1200! I have downloaded and reinstalled two different drivers, with no successful conclusion. Can anyone offer any advice with this, as it has got me completely stumped.

Not all HDMI cables are created equal.  Of the four types, what is yours?  Should clearly say on the cable.

Ah.... unsure, I just ordered an HDMI cable off Amazon. In fairness to me, I would have thought it logical that a digital cable was exactly that, a cable capable of delivering digital information! Oh well, that sounds like the problem. To cover my back I've just ordered an HDMI to DVI converter, so I should be able to run it through the original cable.

It seems the HDMI cable I ordered delivers speeds up to 4K, so unsure what the issue is. This is the description... High-Speed HDMI 2.0 Cable - Supports Ethernet, 3D, Audio Return

it's got to be a very good analogue cable because it carries a very complicated combination of analogue signals in phase quadrature. The hdmi signals are similar in rendering to jpg images in that the signal only carries a code containing a subset of colours, and also resolves poor data integrity as gradual losses to colour and detail. Often replacing any old hdmi cable with a decent new cable alone makes the picture sharper and more colourful. I think DVI and Display Port can carry full colour and higher resolutions.

Thanks for the explanation Steve. I am returning to my original DVI cable after ordering a high quality HDMI to DVI converter. Cheers.
