Not really all that surprised. I have memories of a once-flourishing East African Airways, that rapidly fell down the cliffs due to corruption and mismanagement.

On another, but related topic. A couple of years ago a Geneva based airline (Darwin Air) started service from Cambridge Airport to a small number of destinations in Switzerland, Italy and France. After a few months, Etihad acquired Darwin, and nearly immediately cut the destinations and reduced the frequency of the remaining service to the point that it was no longer useful. Not too long after that they suspended all service form Cambridge. Now there is no regularly scheduled service at all out of Cambridge.

South Africa Airlines is no surprise. In order for me to visit I have to personally go to a South African High Commission and apply for a three month visa including invitation letters or letters of accommodation, etc. It is a very cumbersome process that you would just not bother and go somewhere else. The fee for applying is around $190 plus any other expenses like traveling to the consulate to apply, etc.

So if the South African Government remains this strict with people wanting to visit then they will have to continue to bail out their airline.

Here is an article:

I wonder how Condor Air is doing.  They are starting up non-stop service from Phoenix to Frankfurt, which will be our second European non-stop after British Airways, which I have flown on this year.
