4K TV/Monitor Advice for P3D

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be moving soon and getting an "man cave", which means I'm eagerly looking to move on from my 21" monitor.  I'm definitely planning bigger and think I'm looking at 4K TV's.  I plan to eventually build a home cockpit and have been thinking that 3 curved 4K TV's would work well for the displays...which means I'm thinking of staring with 1 4k curved TV.  Any thoughts on curved vs flat and sizes?  I know curved hasn't made it great for movies, but people really seem to like them for games/simulators.  And what should make me think of a monitor over a TV?  I presume it's primarily response time, but is this much of an issue for flight simulators?  Again, I could see for something like Call of Duty with rapid movements having ghosting issues.  Just not sure that landing a 737 is quite so fast paced.  Thanks for any thoughts and guidance.

I have a curved 4K 49" TV and I don't think the immersion is like what some will claim. I think this is more subjective and you should go see for yourself and decided you if the extra hundred fifty bucks or so is worth it for a curved TV.

The curve on a large TV is intended for viewers at normal TV viewing distances...something like 15 ft for a 55 inch TV.  At 3 ft viewing distance, that curve makes little difference...and it's arguable that even at 15 ft, still not much difference.  Given that the instrument panel the display will represent is flat in real life, I don't see any utility in a curved screen.  I looked at both flat and curved screen versions when I was researching things prior to buying ~20 months ago

As far as sizing goes, the driver for my decision was viewing distance vs. pixel size.  I settled on a 55 inch Samsung JS8500, as the pixellization on the 65 incher was obvious and distracting from 3 ft away.  The pixels are barely discernable on the 55 inch at 3 ft away, but if you intentionally look for them, you can still see it.  I couldn't make out individual pixels at all on a 40 inch 4K TV at that distance.

Most higher-end TVs have a gaming or PC mode that eliminates most/all of the lag that results from internal processing of the picture in the TV.  I use my 55 incher for flight sim only, so no idea if there are issues with other sorts of games...but when using the TV's PC mode, the sim has no issues with lag or ghosting.

Regards

Bit late to this party, but I've a 49 inch curved 4K, a 65 inch flat 4K, both exclusive to flight sims, and a 78 inch curved 4K for normal viewing, no simulation, and don't reckon curved adds anything to the immersion, sim or standard viewing.

Just my 2 cents...

Greetings.

Don't want to hijeck the topic, just want to joint the conversation as there is (was) a talk regarding curved vs flat TV?

I am doing research as well what kind of TV I will buy. My concern if using big flat TV like 50" or more will I get a good view/angle away from the center? I mean will I be able to see side flight deck windows the same way on a flat TV as I would see on curved TV or it will look the same. Currently I have triple monitor set and my side monitors are set a about 20-30 dgr angle so I can see side views better like in real VC. I wonder how will it look on a big flat or curved TV.

Thank you
