I Got an Oculus Rift and Love It

That does not effect the VR cockpit.

hmm that should recalibrate and recenter your position in the captains seat. Sometimes it leaves me a bit too far from the panels and  I recenter again moving myself physically a little further away from the panel so when I come back to my original position I´m closer to the gauges. I mean, you don´t have to move or recenter the flightdeck, only yourself.

No, for me it sometimes starts even outside the aircraft. The only way I can get center is to reboot the pc and start over.

HMD recalibrate origin under controls is the one to map to a key then use it to recenter yourself in the VR virtual cockpit. I am not aware of any other way...

It´s perfectly normal that sometimes starts outside the aircraft, on a wing or wherever, it detects your oculus position and if its on the table, or on the floor when it starts up, your position in the sim will be far away from the flightdeck. But, you should be able to recenter after that. It´s weird that you can´t. Follow the usual procedure: 1 - Be sure the rift  is in Oculus home; 2 - start oculus tray tool ; 3.execute P3d (outside oculus home of course) ; 4 load a 2D flight; 5  change view to VR Virtual Cockpit. Then you should have an option in the add-ons menu (next to Tools and Help menu) with a VR Headset option and in there the Calibrate option.

I`m saying this just to see if we miss a step Paul.

I've been thinking about giving VR a try, but know absolutely nothing about it. When in the Occulus environment , how do you interact with the in-game content? In other words, how would one "touch" or manipulate controls in the cockpit? Is it still done with the mouse pointer, or is there some way to acquire "virtual hands"?

Got it to work, thanks. Now if only I could get project cars to work.

Mainly with the mouse or you can use programs like voiceattack, to assign keys to voice commands. If you use an external program for VR like Flyinside there´s the option of turning knobs and press buttons with the "touch" controllers as virtual hands (or Vive controllers if you have Vive headsets instead of Oculus), but Flyinside is not V4 compatible yet.Somehow I still prefer mouse or voiceattack for that.

Xplane is preparing a huge VR update this fall and they are working specially hard on being able to manipulate controllers with your hands.

For me the ideal set up is a physical (real)yoke and one virtual hand to press buttons and knobs. Hope they manage to do that something like that.

I recently received $400 Amazon gift card that is burning a hole in my wallet, so nothing ventured, nothing gained. Looks like it's time to take the Occulus plunge!

I have a GTX 1080Ti GPU for my P3DV4 computer that I assume will be able to drive the headset with reasonable performance...

Oculus recently implemented a scheme whereupon non-oculus (Steam) titles would appear in Oculus home.

Many of these titles can then be started/run from Oculus home, but some have difficulties. Project Cars is one of these.

If you run one of these titles from Oculus home, you will have to also have steam open in the background, and a box will appear asking you if you wish to run the title. Choosing yes will then usually allow you to continue. This is a Valve/Steam issue yet to be addressed.

Your better option is to go ahead and launch the title as normal from Steam, and then choose the Oculus VR option.

Thanks, I have tried to run Project Cars and did look for any indication of an Oculus VR option but nothing in Project Cars game or display options windows about VR or Oculus.

Go to your Steam Library.

Choose Project Cars and click "Play"

You should now see a box that says

  1. Play Project Cars
  2. Launch Project Cars - HTC Vive in Steam VR Mode
  3. Launch Project Cars - Oculus Rift In Oculus Rift Mode

Choose the third, and put on your headset.

Interesting to hear you find the experience so much better in native VR in P3Dv4 vs P3Dv3 when most people say they are waiting for FlyInside to be released for P3Dv4 since they are not happy at all with the native VR support in P3Dv4.

Were you using FlyInside when you tried the Rift last time in P3Dv3?

And would you care to share some details about the settings you're using now that you're so happy with the result in P3Dv4?

You mention both HDR and PTA, neither of these supported in P3Dv3 when using FlyInside so maybe that's where the big difference is?

I am looking forward to seeing what FlyInside has to offer for a v4 version. For me, HDR is a must and FlyInside for P3Dv3 did not support HDR although I would imagine the FlyInside for P3Dv4 would have HDR support. When I did use FlyInside last year, it just seemed not quite ready for prime time and I did not want to have a $600 Oculus Rift that I would not use that often so I returned it. The setting that I use in non-city areas Medium for autogen draw, very dense for autogen density, High for LOD, and I do have shadows set for cast and receive for autogen buildings and vegetation as well as internal and external vehicle. At times I do have stereo on and other times I have it off (especially in graphically demanding areas. BTW I am using a gtx 970 with 4g or VRAM and an i74970k overclocked to 4.5.

In regards to PTA, in combination with HDR, the difference is huge for me from a visual standpoint.

Wow, thanks. I was just getting ready to take this back to Best Buy after seeing how dim and fuzzy P3Dv4 looked but after racing in the rain in an open wheel vintage a couple times in Project Cars I just might be hooked,''

Now please tell me what other games (both native vr and other) are worth getting that look as good or better than Project Cars?

Check your included games and demos! (As for dim and fuzzy, at the risk of being a broken record and fanboi, the sims that show what VR is for right now are Aerofly and Dcs and even War thunder I come from the fuzziness of ESP based sims to the clarity and speed of AF in VR and it's like coming home, with a great, big, sigh.)

Also: Notable mentions

Google earth VR (Must See!)

DCS World (Gateway drug)

UltraWings

Elite Dangerous.

Star Trek, Bridge Crew.

Dirt Rally.

Eve valkyrie (I believe is included, or at least it used to be)

Rapid Fire: A brief History of Flight. (Free)

Henry (Free)

Edge of Nowhere

Dear Angela (Must See!)

Airborne VR 1944

Lone Echo

Nvidia VR Funhouse (free)

A fear of heights (and other things)

Dead and buried
