FSDiscover....who can I write to?

Recommended Posts

I absolutely miss FSDiscover that was so valuable to me in FSX.  Who can I write to to BEG THE DEVELOPER to make it available to Prepar3dv4?  I am loving P3d so much.  No more OOM'S and beautiful scenery all the way to the horizon.  No blurries, and no problems.  But I really enjoyed seeing the names of the airports that FSDiscover provided.

I would gladly pay for a whole new program of FSDiscover if it were available.

Do any of you know an email of someone who might be able to give me some optimism on the future development of this great program?

I know it's not FSDiscover but are you aware that P3D can display the airport names itself internally?

Please tell me what you are referring to here.  Exactly how do you do this?

They display like the aircraft labels and can be toggled on and off. This is a screenie I use a 40" 4K display so the font is small.

There's a couple of steps - first - locate the STANDARD.XML file in your C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4\Controls folder - edit it and search for CTRL+SHIFT+P

mine looks like this:

<Entry>
            <Key>CTRL+SHIFT+P</Key>
            <Down>POSITION_FREEZE_USER</Down>
        </Entry>

change it to this

<Entry>
            <Key>CTRL+SHIFT+P</Key>
            <Down>TOGGLE_AIRPORT_NAME_DISPLAY</Down>
        </Entry>

and save it.

Now all you need do is use the keyboard or assign it to a button.

If you map through FSUIPC you can directly assign TOGGLE_AIRPORT_NAME_DISPLAY to a button.

When I try to open the Standard.xml file,  a pop up comes up and says, "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Please install a program, or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel".

A bit confusing there, and perhaps a little beyond my ability to figure this out.

Vic - this is an amazing bit of info. I definitely give this a try as I agree with Stan, FSDiscover was a real gem. Thanks a bunch!

I use FSDT's XPOI for years.... luv it.  Gives me airports (manned or unmanned), cities, lakes, mountains, places of interest, you name it and can all be customized on what you wish to see.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, EVGA GeForce 3080 Ti, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit

Tried the trial version of XPOI and thought it was kind of ugly.  Large funnels touching the ground really were kind of disturbing.  Perhaps I didn't know how to control it just to show airports, so maybe I'll give it another chance.

Vic,

Where does this BRILLIANCE come from?  Wow.  I followed your step by step instructions and using FSUIPC5, those wonderful airport names came up...just as you indicated they would.  I've never really used FSUIPC before, but I can now see the power of it.  I thank you very much for this valuable information.  Prepar3dv4 will now be more functional for me when flying VFR (and even IFR).

Now, if only I could get it to tell me how many miles to that airport, that would be something (like FSdiscover).

Once again, thank you for your detailed instructions and helping me to get to this level.

Hi Vic

I know I am a little late to the party but only just found this thread when searching for info on FSDiscover and this is just brilliant!  Thanks for the info, it will certainly help me to  finally move to P3Dv4 fully and perhaps say goodbye to my dual FSX install.

Out of curiosity, and without seeming to want the moon on a stick! do you know if there is anyway you can edit the font size and colour for the TOGGLE_AIRPORT_NAME_DISPLAY option anywhere and also the range at which the info is displayed?

If it is possible, that would be awesome!

Thanks

James

Hi James -

The range is locked in at 10 miles. Not aware of any programs that modify this. As to the font size, etc - There are a few tweaks floating around for changing the tex displayed in the corners, etc but I have no idea if that works on the airport names. Never tried it.

OK, thanks Vic, I will have a look via Google and see if I can find anything.  If I do, will let you know and drop in the method here if I find one.

Appreciate the quick response and the answer to one of my two FSX to P3D add on prayers, FSDiscover (even if it is only airports) and FSPassengers (one day hopefully!)
