GNS 530 Working GREAT

Recommended Posts

After some minor install issues I just wanted to report that I have had no problems at all with the GNS 530, which I installed in my Carenado C525 to replace the Proline21 as the Master FMS

It works very well! I'm using the Desktop Aviator GNS 2670 switch panel hardware and was able to assign all the knobs and buttons (except the lower left knob will only change VHF not VOR freqs)

Thank you!!

Thank you for your kind words!

The native GPS command to switch from COM input to NAV input (i.e. pressing the GNS left inner knob) is:

KEY_GPS_BUTTON1

We don't have a direct mapping for the left outer and inner knob though because there is no default GPS knob for this. We've been looking to different possibilities but wanted to get our customer feedback in using it first, in order to choose the best option. This is why the complete mapping is not documented in the User's Manual yet, and will be added in the next revision.

In the meantime, here is the actual mapping to get started:

KEY_GPS_NEAREST_BUTTON , GNS CDI.
KEY_GPS_OBS_BUTTON , GNS OBS.
KEY_GPS_MSG_BUTTON , GNS MSG.
KEY_GPS_MSG_BUTTON_DOWN , GNS MSG (press).
KEY_GPS_MSG_BUTTON_UP , GNS MSG (release).
KEY_GPS_FLIGHTPLAN_BUTTON , GNS FPL.
KEY_GPS_VNAV_BUTTON , GNS VNAV.
KEY_GPS_PROCEDURE_BUTTON , GNS PROC.
KEY_GPS_ZOOMIN_BUTTON , GNS zoom in.
KEY_GPS_ZOOMOUT_BUTTON , GNS zoom out.
KEY_GPS_DIRECTTO_BUTTON , GNS Direct.
KEY_GPS_MENU_BUTTON , GNS Menu.
KEY_GPS_CLEAR_BUTTON , GNS CLR.
KEY_GPS_CLEAR_BUTTON_DOWN , GNS CLR (press).
KEY_GPS_CLEAR_BUTTON_UP , GNS CLR (release).
KEY_GPS_ENTER_BUTTON , GNS ENT.
KEY_GPS_CURSOR_BUTTON , GNS push cursor.
KEY_GPS_GROUP_KNOB_INC , GNS GPS/CRS chapter up (right outer knob cw).
KEY_GPS_GROUP_KNOB_DEC , GNS GPS/CRS chapter dn (right outer knob ccw).
KEY_GPS_PAGE_KNOB_INC , GNS GPS/CRS page up (right inner knob cw).
KEY_GPS_PAGE_KNOB_DEC , GNS GPS/CRS page dn (right inner knob ccw).
KEY_GPS_BUTTON1 , GNS NAV COM toggle.
KEY_GPS_BUTTON2 , GNS COM flip flop.
KEY_GPS_BUTTON3 , GNS NAV flip flop.

These were all quite intuitive to map - I happened to assign GPS_BUTTON1 to the lower left knob push which does move the cursor between COM and NAV but the dials as you indicate don't know when this switch happens.  So for now, I'm just using that for tuning COM, since the 530 automatically inserts the ILS freq for the procedure you select and I don't normally have to dial that in.

This has been working more reliably than the Mindstar version I had in P3Dv3 which often froze up.

After giving more thoughts, there is a great change the next build maps KEY_GPS_BYTTON1/2/3/4/5 to the left knobs (push, outer cw, outer cow, inner cw, inner ccw respectively). The flip/flop have their own commands already!

+1

Just completed a 90 minute flight in the A2A 172 with a duel unit setup, crossfill, including a flight plan import (a big plus - no more knob turning when programing a FP) and everything worked perfectly.
