Over the Inutil Bay, which is also called “Useless Bay”. It is part of the Southern Magellan Strait and borders the Tierra del Fuego Island. Btw, it was given the name Useless Bay in 1827 by a certain Capt. Phillip King, who found that it didn’t offer neither anchorage nor shelter in case of a storm.

Good old Avensa!  I flew on Avensa back in 1990.  Flew a 737 from JFK to Caracas, then a 727 from Caracas to Porlamar on Margarita Island.  They did not board my luggage on my inbound United flight from SFO so I went my first day in Margarita without it.  While waiting in Caracas I found out a man and his wife were related to me by marriage, their sister was married to my cousin.  Small world!  We spent time together during the three weeks I was on Margarita Island.

Love your screenshots, they really capture the mood of South America.  I haven't been back to Venezuela since '90 but I dream of visiting Margarita and Caracas again someday.  I spent the night in Caracas at a very modern hotel called the Eurobuilding.  They had a power cutoff while I was there and I almost missed my outbound Pan Am Airbus flight back to JFK.  Caracas airport back then was very exciting, quite nice actually, I enjoyed my wait for my flight while I was there.

I loved how the airport was situated, with the main runway running parallel to the beach on one side and the reddish tinged mountains on the other.

How many days did you wait for this good weather over Tierra del Fuego, Bernd? Excellent pictures and an extraordinary plane!

(When I travelled to Punta Arenas ten years ago, they used an ordinary A320...)
