FSX Freeze - ~20 minutes

Recommended Posts

For the last three weeks I have struggled with the worst problem I've experienced in 19 years of flight sim. That is the FSX freeze phenomena after about 20 minutes of operation. I've been studying uiatomationcore.dll and a host of other things that ultimately lead nowhere to a solution. For the third time or fourth time I'm considering a FSX re-install. I really think the best solution may be to give up.

Do these things occur with P3D?

You have been studying uiatomationcore.dll and a host of other things that ultimately lead nowhere to

a solution.  Studying or actually doing?

Do these things occur with P3D?  Yes.  I have seen threads on stuttering, freezing, pretty much the same stuff as FSX.  Did you add anything recently to cause this behavior?

I had the CPU, RAM, Hard Drive and Motherboard updated by a local guy. That's way over my head, so I guess I am going to have him come back and spend the day.

Have you check the suggested solutions in the AVSIM CTD Guide (see link in my signature)?  There are several we found across the Internet for freezes during a flight.

If you FSUIPC and have checked Autosave, this is the most common cause of a freeze during a flight.

You did not install FSX properly as suggested by many experts (in a non-default folder like C:\FSX).

The uiautomationcore.dll only fixes two errors - for Windows 8 and 10 users, it allows FSX to start up; the other fixes an issue where right clicking on your aircraft panel and selecting a menu at least 19 times will cause a freeze (personally I have tried to replicate but have been unable to make my FSX freeze up when right clicking on the menu.  But the experts say it fixes the problem).

There's another major cause of a freeze during a flight and that's having MyTrafficX installed with trafficmil.bgl enabled in the MyTraffic\Scenery folder.  Some of the aircraft have textures not compatible with FSX or P3D as some AI were made when FS2004 was the only sim running.  Just rename it to trafficmil.bgl.off.

Hope this helps resolve your issues.  Please do not reinstall FSX into a non-default folder as that would be a nightmare reinstalling everything.  Just make sure UAC is disabled in Windows and your anti-virus program is not set to scan your FSX folder.

Hi Jim, I've been studying the AVSIM CTD Guide and subsequently ran the APP HANG program following a recent freeze. Below are my specs, followed by APP Hang data. I experience FSX (boxed) freezes about 40% of the time. To date, I am still mystified to cause (s) of FSX freeze.

1.) "If you FSUIPC and have checked Autosave, this is the most common cause of a freeze during a flight."

- I have the registered version of FSUIPC with Autosave in-checked.

2.) "You did not install FSX properly as suggested by many experts (in a non-default folder like C:\FSX). "

-FSX is installed in  C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/ Microsoft Flight Simulator X/,

-But it has been there for several years without issue.

I have the uiautomationcore.dll installed in the primary FSX folder. I thought I read it is appropriate for Win 7/64. If not, should I now remove it?

The uiautomationcore.dll is not installed when you install FSX.  You had to download and move a certain version into your main FSX folder as it has to be done manually.  You can right click the uiautomationcore.dll in your main FSX folder, select Properties and then Details and it will show you the version you have installed.  There are two different versions - see page 26, AVSIM CTD Guide for links to the two versions and more details.

So, if you renamed your fsx.cfg to fsx.cfg.old and restarted FSX, the error continues after 20 minutes?  When you rename the dll.xml to dll.xml.off and restart fsx, the error still occurs after 20 minutes?  These and other solutions for this type of application hang shown in the AVSIM CTD Guide under Freezes During a Flight have fixed the problem for many other members as I got the solutions from our forums and from forums around the Internet.  An AppHang is extremely difficult to fix and only you can fix it.  There is no one solution that fits all.

Thanks Jim,

I've tried both versions of uiautomationcore.dll with no change. I'm now going to try without uiautomationcore.dll in the FSX directory.

Would you recommend uninstalling FSX and re-installing in C:/ and avoiding Program File (x86)?

Definitely not.  I had my installation in the default for several years without any problems but some "experts" with Operating Systems and Applications recommended to install in a folder outside of the default.

One of the things you should do though is to disable the following module - LoadedModule[182]=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\CMeteoXml.dll.  The CMeteoXml.dll belongs to Carenado and is loaded via the dll.xml.  It causes crashes occasional and I have disabled it.  There was once a bug in it that caused many crashes for everyone who owned a Carenado aircraft but it may have been updated by Carenado.  Still it is not needed to run any Carenado aircraft.

I think your problem is associated to something small like the CMeteoXml.dll and reinstalling FSX to put it outside the default would probably not fix the issue.  You would have to reactivate the program too and that's always tricky as you may have run out of the number of times you can reactivate and Microsoft does not make it easy for anyone to request an increase in activations.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks, I'm trying that CMeteoXml.dll idea now. Have you heard of any issues with AS16? I've been meaning to review their HiFi forum as well.

AS16 works well in FSX and P3D (at least for me). It installs everything including simconnect so it can properly communicate with FSX.  Wish other developers would do the same.  Programs that are required for VATSIM should have an installer that does everything including installing a version of simconnect that works with their program.

You might want to look at your Event Viewer (see around Page 7 of the AVSIM CTD Guide for images on where to look).  Many times your system will try to run a schedule while you are using FSX and sometimes that could cause a crash or freeze as the system decides it wants all of the resources to accomplish the schedule.

Best regards,

Jim

AVSIM has an AS16 Forum too.  The developer's are active in the forum.

Jim,

I think CMeteoXml.dll may have been the ticket! I did an uneventful flight in the beast (C207); stepped out for a glass of wine, and things are sill running. I can't thank you enough for all your help. In addition, thanks for the AVSIM CTD Guide. There is a wealth of valuable information compiled there. I'll report back if something else goes haywire.

Good Morning Jim

Sadly, a test this morning revealed the CMeteoXml.dll fix was not the ultimate culprit. Maybe this could be a clue: sometimes when starting FSX and making standard menu selections, the familiar "click" sounds are absent. When this occurs about 50% of the time, I know I'm more likely to have the 20 minute freeze. Hopefully, this could be clue. If not, maybe this is the juncture where I upgrade to Win 10 and P3DV4 after a several years and expense with FSX.

Any additional ideas you might have will be appreciated.

Thanks / Les Parson

Hi Les,

All of my ideas are in the AVSIM CTD Guide.  I just went through a series of CTD's with the Phenom 300 for P3Dv4.  Heard now it was caused by V4 and it will be fixed in the next update of P3D.  I have it installed in FSX and ran the same scenario and never got a crash.  Just in P3DV4.  But it was a 20 minute type crash where the sim just shutdown with no error message but one showed up in AppCrashView.  But I did follow the guidance I have on Page 10 of the Guide where one would rename the FSX.cfg, dll.xml, and scenery.cfg and see if the freeze or crash continued and they stopped because the Navigraph and the Carenavigraph.dll were not loaded by the dll.xml.  Renamed the dll.xml back to the one I had renamed and then tried going to another airport as all of my crashes happened if I would load the flight from KDCA (WashX).  If I loaded from KIAD, no crash.  So, little things like that did not resolve my crashes but I found that I would never start from KDCA again if I wanted a successful flight.

I just upgraded to Windows 10 and built a new system (see it in my signature).  I reinstalled FSX and P3DV4 on the new system.  Starting over fresh is always good to do once in a while as things get corrupted.  I have done it several times after being unable to fix a CTD.  But I know now that I can usually fix my issue by just renaming the FSX.cfg and know some types of crashes like the StackHash and NTDLL.dll crashes are caused by faulting overclocks.

Good luck with your continued investigations.

Best regards,

Jim
