Is VR any good in 3rd person view?

Recommended Posts

I understand the draw while inside the cockpit, but after takeoff, much of my time is spent in 3rd person view admiring the plane, clouds and scenery.

Is VR any good in this situation?

I've only tried P3D with FlyInside so don't know how native P3D works in this regard but with FlyInside you're not able to go to the normal spot views etc. At least not to my knowledge. Personally I find this is only adding to the sense of realism since you wouldn't be able to perform those kind of things in the real aircraft.

What you can do though which is really cool is to use the Avatar mode while on the ground. Being able to walk around your aircraft this way in VR is nothing short of amazing!

On a number of occasions I've used this mode to walk to a good plane spotting location such as close to the runway threshold to perform virtual plane spotting from the best seats in the theater during busy online events on Vatsim

Third person view does not work in native P3d. In flyinside...... it's very disconcerting how it attempts to handle this for ESP sims and not recommended at all unless you want to be disoriented.

In DCS, Aerofly, and IL2, third person views are quite nice.

you can do third person view on ground without the avatar body and walk around the airport.  That is insanely cool experience.  You really then see how large the distance between the terminals is.  But Flyinside P3Dv4 is being tested as I type this post :gaul:

I can't seem to able to get flight views in air but with PMDG 737 or 777, just walk behind the cockpit door and you get whoa feel (like in some movies) the ground is beneath your feet lol.  I hear Aerofly FS2 VR experience is something else (will buy that during steam thanksgiving/cybermonday sale).
