TB-10 Tobago & TB-20 Trinidad now for P3D V4

Recommended Posts

Well, evidently it was some kind of exe or install error, which I did kind of have my suspicions of since when I first downloaded the V4 installer, it was taking ages. a reinstall appears to have rectified matters and as noted in a previous post, there is no longer an issue with some paint jobs working and others not. G-VPPL was one of them, but as you can see from this screenie, it is working just fine now:

I still use the Lionheart Trinidad. Works perfectly in v4, however, the model is obviously not anymore up to date. Do you recommend replacing it with the JF variant?

Well, what I can tell you is that I too had the Lionheart Trinidad and Tobago Collection, in fact it was one of my favourite GA add-ons because it has a very nice VC which depicts the nice feeling of being comfortably surrounded by the aeroplane as is the case in a real TB10/20, but, I lost the install file for that Lionheart version in a computer crash of two HDDs simultaneously a few years ago (so there went my back up). At the time I thought, ah, no problem, just re-download it from Flight1 (which is where I bought it). However, when I check my purchases at Flight1 (just did so a second ago), sure enough it still shows that I bought the Lionheart Trinidad and Tobago Collection on June 17 2011, and the order number was 887314, but despite this, it is no longer available to download, which is presumably owing to some fall out between Lionheart and Flight1 or some such. So there went my lovely TB20 until this one came out.

That is actually one of the things which makes me less inclined to use Flight1 these days, as there are a number of purchases I've made with them for which the exe files are no longer available. It is also exactly why I'm a fan of Just Flight for purchases, because I've been buying stuff from them online since 2009 (just checked that too), and literally every purchase I've ever made from them is still downloadable. And even before that I was buying their stuff on disk right back as far as when they started making stuff for FS.

Anyway, because of this, I was thrilled when Just Flight made a new TB10 and TB20 add-on, and it was an instant buy for me when there was initially only a 32 bit version for FSX. I certainly wasn't disappointed with it, although it is quite heavy on resources. I've really liked the TB10 and TB20 aeroplanes ever since they were first built in the mid Seventies through to the Eighties, when I recall reading Pilot and Flyer magazine reviews of them and thinking, yeah I like those, one day maybe I'll buy one (still too poor to be able to do that in real life lol, although I have actually flown one for real once, and it is very cool, feels more like sitting in a fighter plane than it does a GA aeroplane, that's the French for you, they do everything with style). Now I'm happy again because there is one for P3D V4, so any heaviness on resources is unlikely to cause a VAS error, which was a risk with the FSX version and indeed P3D versions prior to V4.

There are a lot of nice things about the Just Flight TB20 and TB10 and I've been eagerly awaiting it for P3D V4 because it is such a lovely aeroplane, which they have done justice to, and it makes a change from all those Cessnas, Beechcraft and Pipers. Likewise that is why I really love Lionheart's Bellanca Viking (probably one of my favourite FS add-ons ever and another aeroplane I would buy for real if that lottery ticket ever does me a favour lol). So I'm well familiar with the Lionheart aeroplanes and how nice they are, and the fact that they work in P3D V4, as my Bellanca Viking does (was smart enough to buy that one from Simmarket, which is another place that keeps your downloads available, or at least almost all of them, one or two have gone, but in fairness, they are the really old ones I'm not too bothered about).

But, if you want a TB10 or TB20 which makes use of more modern texturing and modeling techniques and has a bit more going on systems-wise, then the Just Flight TB10 and TB20s are the ones to have, as they are every bit as good as the (much acclaimed) set of PA-28s they developed recently, with all that vapour-locking, battery wear etc simulated, although one thing I have noticed is that the FSX version picks up an installation of Active Sky Next and therefore enables the aeroplane's Stormscope, but the P3D V4 version doesn't detect my installation of Active Sky's latest incarnation, and so the gauge defaults to being merely a TCAS. This is something I hope they can patch for the P3D V4 version and I have reported this on JF's forums.

I will just add that it is important to remember the Just Flight Trinidad and Tobago are pretty heavy on your system because of all the fancy texturing, 3D instruments, fancy lighting and shading and so on (more so than their PA-28), so if that is a concern, you might find it makes P3D v4 struggle a bit on a computer without a lot of CPU and GPU power, but having said that, it was getting over 30 fps on that pic above, and that is climbing out of UK2000's add-on EGGP airport and with Active Sky and ASCA doing its thing too, so if you have the computing horsepower necessary for a decent add-on aeroplane, it will be okay.

So in short, do I recommend it, yes, so long as your computer is not struggling with P3D V4.

Thanks for this summary. I might get it and send the old Lionheart rendition into its deserved retirement :-) Regarding buying addons: I buy almost all my addons exclusively via simmarket. Never let me down.

I installed it, cleaned it up, as I normally do, and find that it flies just as well as it did in FSX.  GTN750 in the panel... very nice!

I was going to ask you why do I have much better fps with your panel, then I noticed that the stormscope was disabled. At least now the plane is usable. Thanks!

Yup, me too for anything JF don't sell, and occasionally from places such as Simshack and PC Aviator etc, but one thing buying from JF does, which is why I tend to favour them, which buying from Simmarket doesn't, is give you loyalty reward points as part of their Just Rewards scheme. Typically you get around 1.50 Dollars for a purchase from them, sometimes more, sometimes less depending on how much you are spending. If you buy a fair few add-ons, that mounts up pretty quickly, and before long you can have yourself a shiny new toy for free.

It's worth noting too that JF tend to get patches and updated exe files up pretty quickly for stuff they sell, for example, they had the P3D V4 installation file for the Fly Sim Ware Learjet 35 up on their site within about 2 hours of it being released by the developer, whereas some places took weeks to get that thing up.

Incidentally, in case anyone missed it, their DC-8 is now V4 compatible too, so if you want to have a bit of classic jetliner action in P3D V4, now you can.

Uninstalled the TB10/20 and now P3D fires up okay, so whatever was stopping it from doing so was evidently related to this aeroplane add-on. Gonna try installing it again and see what happens, currently downloading it again just to make sure it wasn't a corrupt exe file.

Glad you got it sorted. Mine is working much better with Bert's Panel. I'm so glad because I really like this plane. How is the Arrow III with regards to FPS?

All of the approximately five hundred different variants (lol) of the PA-28 which Just Flight have made recently are a lot less FPS hungry than the TB10 and TB20, so if you can run that okay, the PA-28s will be no problem. I just wish they'd make a floatplane version of the PA-28, they've pretty much made every other variant of the thing and the Cherokee looks great on floats.

How unfair can you be? Well, let's find out shall we? With a nasty test which I devised. Cue evil laughter: Muhahahahaha...

Since the Just Flight TB10 and TB20 is undeniably a bit of a resource hog compared to most other GA aeroplanes, owing to its fancy textures, 3D gauges and such, I figured I'd give it the ultimate test to see how it does when everything else in the sim is hogging resources too. If I'd have tried this in FSX, I doubt it would have even fired up before issuing a VAS warning ping as my computer exploded. I suspect it would have been an unflyable 2 fps slide show if it ever did manage to load up, but at least P3D uses the GPU a bit, thus it was time to give it a try...

So, I put the AI air traffic up to 100 percent, the road and water traffic was on too, but only on about 10 percent. Water detail was on the highest slider setting. Then I cranked up Active Sky for P3D V4, and Active Sky Cloud Art and selected maximum cloud coverage and maximum detail range, detailed clouds and volumetric fog and had it bringing in live weather updates, then turned up the autogen range and the autogen detail to max settings too, then turned all the fancy lighting options on as well, and having done all that, then I plonked the TB20 in the middle of the sixteen enhanced airports which are dotted around the approximately 5,000 square miles of photorealistic terrain covered with custom autogen for the entire Ile de France region which you get with that add-on by VFR France. This scenery is pretty much guaranteed to make any FS aeroplane you have start to struggle a bit what with all those airports firing AI planes about all over the place, because Charles DeGaulle airport is the ninth busiest airport in the entire world, Orly is the second busiest airport in France and LeBourget is pretty busy too, and they're all less than ten miles away from where the TB20 was in this video.

Then I cranked up FRAPS too, which always slows things down when it is capturing full screen stuff at 30 fps. So how did the TB20 do? Well, actually not that bad. You can see the video is chugging a bit, but in all honesty that's mostly because of FRAPS using resources to capture the video, with FRAPS off, it was managing a creditable 20-25 fps, and at other less mental add-on sceneries such as UK2000's EGCC, it gets about 45 fps with the same P3D options as above. When you consider that P3D was having to render pretty much every single building in Paris and the entire surrounding provinces, I think that's pretty impressive for such a fancy GA aeroplane add-on:

You'd think the developer would update the TB10/20 with a hotfix especially if Bert's settings make a big difference. At least lets hope.

Hotfix to address performance? Unfortunately it wouldn't be possible to significantly increase performance without creating entirely new texture sets, modifying the 3D model or stripping out gauges/functionality. The performance isn't caused by a bug which would be addressable by a hotfix and Bert's panel cfg modifications would not be suitable for us to provide to customers in the product itself because they remove certain panels etc (we'll look into performance options like those on the Tornado GR1 though). You're welcome to modify the panel cfg however you like though, and it sounds like Bert's mods are worth trying if you are struggling with performance - in particular disabling the Stormscope and whichever GPS/GTN panels you don't intend to use as those will impact FPS.

We are looking into any bugs that have been reported and are investigating the Stormscope compatibility with Active Sky.

Thanks

Maybe I used the wrong word in hotfix, I was just thinking that the developer could come up with idea's to improve performance, as I didn't know what was causing a lack of performance in the V4 version of the aircraft. Luckily it looks like you may be doing what some people need.

Hi Chris,

No, it's only an issue in P3D v4.

An update for the FSW Arrow III is due out later today followed by another next week.
