TrueGlass from TFDi - Finally a decent rain-on-windshield effect in P3D

22 minutes into this stream there is a demo https://go.twitch.tv/videos/180385154

Looks promising and a great step forward in flight simming. I know it's only early stages but I hope the rain on the windshield gets more dramatic, like in moderate to heavy rain it makes it very difficult to see out the windshield forcing you to use the wipers. With what I'm seeing in all the videos, even in flight its effect it subtle and not so dramatic and you can easily see through the windshield even without the use of wipers.

Now like I said it is early stages and we only have a couple of videos showcasing it, so it could be there but just not seen in the videos.

The same streamer recorded their conference presentation and I caught at the q&a if my memory is right, the intensity can be adjusted and changed. Also they plan ice and fog effects. It makes the 717 a good investment for flight sim fun. Like Chaseplane did in their future features presentation.

"+1 I plan to buy it by the Holidays but a sale this month I'd buy it now"

Only if you were at the show.. unfortunately. I still plan to buy when the rain effect comes but wish the coupon was universal.

Well that's fantastic then, this would be great for immersion.

I only have the pmdg 737 at the moment and I'm really considering the tfdi 717 now.

I have the 777 p3d license only and have thought about my next plane too. The 717 is leading, but too bad that sale is only if you visited Cosford. The 717 is already leading for me, I have all 3 FsDreamteam scenery for Hawaii, and Orbx is doing Hawaii as a region.

Orbx is doing Hawaii? That is great news, thanks. I also have the FSDreamteam Hawaiian scenery but the main airport really gives me the stutters.

The 717 would really fit in with that scenery though so it is still very tempting.

I have not tried that area in p3d v4 but fsx I did not have stutters. Orbx announced a long time ago that as a future region I hope it has not changed.

Yup, that'd be my hope too, I think even if you are not a real world pilot, everyone has been in the situation where they've been in rain which was so bad they couldn't see out of their car windscreen at all and had to pull over, I know I've had that happen a few times, and I've had it whilst flying too where the canopy steamed up so badly that I had to use the DV panel to see where I was going and fly around waiting for it to demist the inside of the canopy (whilst getting all wet on my left side lol) as the temperature equalised before I could try landing. That kind of visual effect would be the sort of thing which could make a flight sim far more convincing.

They did announce it a long time ago, I don't think they have killed the idea completely, but there was apparently difficulty in getting adequate photoreal for the project and it was shelved, according to the forum discussions about it.  might still happen for all I know, but I don't think it's in the imminent plans any more.

Still the 717 is a fraction of the cost compared to pmdgs p3d compatible aircraft. So I think it's a win win situation.

The intensity of the rain in the simulator affects the density of rain you see on the windshield. The "Gray and Rainy" weather theme has lighter rain by default, which many are using in videos.

Pulling over is for sissy's....
Just open your driver seat window and put you hand on the guard rail. That's what they are there for.
Also works in heavy fog

Well, at least according to TDFi staff. Their windshield effects require a small modification directly to each aircraft model, but it remains to be seen what exactly that means. My guess is that the reason for setting the effect up in that fashion is to prevent anyone from just buying one enabled aircraft and porting it to every aircraft for free. Then there would be no incentive for other aircraft developers to license the official version. Thus, the effects have to consist of more than DLLs, XML, models (wipers etc.) and fx.

The modification to each aircraft model requires the source files. New polygons for the rain surfaces have to be created, materials and textures assigned. Angles and other measurements will more than likely have to be made so that the rain drop motion gets correctly reflected. Wiper coverage also has to be calculated. This is highly technical stuff which only the original developers can do. I am pretty sure TFDi would love to make something that the end user can apply to every aircraft in their own hangar just like that (the logistics would be easier than having to interface with other developers) but the simulator doesn't lend itself to that.
