Blue Ridge Fall Colors

Blue Ridge Fall Colors

This is just a quick Fall Colors tour of the scenic Blue Ridge in Virginia and North Carolina. We have been here before, so you may be familiar with many of the airfields.

We shall depart from Indian Head Maryland (2W5) and proceed to fly up the Potomac River and pass over Washington National Airport (KDCA) [we somehow have clearance to do this] up the river to the Georgetown NDB GTN where we turn south west to land at Manassas Regional (KHEF). This first part is a scenic flight and might be done at a leisurely pace. Then we shall go down the Shenandoah Valley to enjoy the colors. In succession, we land at Shenandoah Regional (KSHD), Ingalls (KHSP), Virginia Tech (KBCB), Mountain Empire (KMKJ), Elk River (NC06), Mountain Air (2NC0) and end at beautiful Asheville (KAVL). [Elk River and Mountain Air are worth a look before you land the first time.]

Flightplan:
Available here.

Aircraft:
This route is relatively long at 373nm. A fast single or a twin-engined aircraft capable of about 170 kts would be appropriate.

Recommended scenery:
Standard Stuff:
Orbx FTX Global Base.
Orbx FTX Global North America Landclass.
Orbx FTX North America Freeware Airports
Orbx FTX Global Vector. (Not necessary.)

Special for this flight (all freeware):
Perhaps later.

Particulars:
Date and time: Saturday October 14, 2017, 18:00 UTC
Where: AVSIM RTWR Teamspeak - Casual Flights Channel
Teamspeak Server Address: ts.teamavsim.com
Cross-Platform Multiplayer: JoinFS. (FSX, FSX-SE, and P3D)
If you want to help others enjoy the multiplayer experience, don't forget to enter your aircraft details on the multiplayer spreadsheet (linked here). Your courtesy will save others a lot of time and effort. Thanks!

Recommend that you set your initial clock to 14:00 hours in local time to account for flight time and the usual "faffing about" time.

As we speak A2A aircraft are suffering a ground handling issue in P3Fv4.1. So I'm going with the English Electric Lightning...or Van's RV7.

Looking forward to it.

Hi Folks,

Nice tour - beautiful country - and the perfect time of year...

Landed at two of those fields in real life - Ingalls Field and Shenandoah - Ingalls is the highest public field East of the Mississippi and it's kind of odd flying a pattern at nearly 5K feet for a flat lander... It was run by this nice old codger - looked like the bearded old guy off one of those moonshine shows - "Dwayne" IIRC - been there like forever - he liked to help traffic with radio calls on Unicom  - like a mini-tower (uncontrolled field) - the only thing he didn't say was "clear to land"... Very unique experience...

Country roads take me home...

Enjoy your trip...

Regards,

Scott

The flight plan zip file now includes a quickly-cobbled-together "Blue Ridge Fall Colors Pilots Guide." If you like, you can re-download or simply get it here.

A2A stuff is all good now. Check A2A forum for update.

I found updates for the GTN 750 and for ORBX. Any others I may have missed?

Can't make flight tomorrow, having our Thanksgiving, a week late due to family commitments. So tomorrow is all about turkey.

Vector Airport Elevation Correction. A Caution.

For Orbx Global Vector users who are also using the Orbx FTX Global Freeware Airports for North America. Please be sure that you have disabled the Airport Elevation Correction (AEC) for the following 5 airports:

KSHD  Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport
KHSP  Ingalls Field Airport
KMKJ  Mountain Empire Airport
2NC0 Mountain Air Airport
