interesting read: A380 3-engine ferry flight special procedures

Recommended Posts

I'm sure you heard about the AF A380 that had one of its engines disintegrate midflight which forced it to perform an emergency landing at Goose Bay. According to Reuters, the plane will soon be ferried out of Goose Bay on 3 engines and be brought back to Paris.

Captain Dave (twitter @DaveWallsworth) is a BA A380 captain and he tweeted an interesting article, explaining the special procedures and preparations for such 3 engine ferry flight, including a 5 meter offset from the RWY center-line to cater for the the asymmetric thrust.

I imagine it would be similar for the 747, although this is the first I've heard of being offset from the runway. I'm not sure if this needed to be done for the 747.

No mention of offsetting from the centreline for the 747. However the takeoff procedure is quite fiddly and involves the co-pilot holding the control column forward whilst the Captain gradually increases thrust and steers - then once takeoff thrust is achieved the Captain takes the controls and carries out the takeoff.

Rather convoluted and quite the exercise in teamwork!
