Canada to buy used Australian hornets

Recommended Posts

Here in Canada we have a history of providing our men and woman in the armed forces hand me down equipment other countries are in the process of retiring.  The people in suits in Ottawa don't think its important for our service members to have the best. While Canada waste money buying Australia's used F18's , Australia with a smaller population then Canada spends 10 Billion dollars a year more on defense then Canada.  Australia has spent the last 10 years modernizing its Navy, Army and Air force,

Better than the uk wasting millions on that abortion which is the F-35 Flymo. (the hovering one). We should buy some Sukhois to grace the deck of our latest carrier...

The proposed purchase from Australia is retaliation in part against Boeing's attempts to smother Canada's Bombardier's C Series jets at birth.  Boeing's hypocritical complaints have persuaded the US government to impose a ludicrous 330% (!) tariff on Bombardier.  This in turn  has understandably soured Canada's previous plans to buy Boeing"s F-18 Super Hornets.

Bingo!  That is correct and what Boeing is doing makes no sense.  Bombardier builds small capacity, regional jetliners, Other than the B737, Boeing builds high capacity jetliners.  There is really little overlap in the two markets, so it makes no sense to me as to why Boeing would do such a thing.  I wonder if Boeing will target Embraer next?

So, who do you think Canada is going to war with? Australia has actually spent a fair amount of time, fighting in the Pacific and Asia and takes its treaty obligations seriously. I worked with Aussie troops in Vietnam who actually were there to fight. Canada honors her treaty obligations with non-combat troops only.

Its funny how those so called experts who say the F35 is a lemon have never flown one. Here is a Canadian news report from CBC in 1980 with them saying the Hornet is a lemon! Sound familiar? And the hornet turned out to be a fabulous platform.

You are so out of the true fact zone here that you owe it to yourself to re-educate yourself. Start by a google search of "JTF 2 Presidential Unit Citation". That is just a sample of Canadian participation in joint and combined operations since Korea.

Well, as Sydney Camm once said: 'All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics', and ever was it so when it comes to purchasing aeroplanes.

No I haven't flown one, but perhaps we need to ask some Su-35, Typhoon, F-22 and Rafale jocks about the hovering bag of WAY overpriced word not allowed..

If one believes the media:........ the US gov’t import export financial assistance is referred to as the Bank of Boeing while here in Canada the Canadian federal and Quebec provincial gov’ts are the Bank of Bombardier. What’s interesting is at least Boeing is publically owned while Bombardier while in theory is publicly owned in reality it is controlled allegedly by one Quebec family. Our Liberal prime minister who has a great amount of his voting base coming from Quebec is not likely to do anything which might upset any Quebecers which includes buying a new Boeing product. He’d rather buy used equipment first for our military if it keeps Quebec happy.  As Canada tends to operate military aircraft for 30-40 years or longer buying something with a lot of its life behind it may not be the smartest move or the best use of limited tax dollars. Boeing  on the other hand has a large facility in Winnipeg (western Canada) among other locations that both the Quebec Premier and Montreal mayor are calling on Trudeau to take action against even/especially if it costs western job and destroys an aerospace sector....that could be competing against Bombardier down the road. It’s a mess and both our governments could have behaved better. We’re both stuck with the status quo for the time being.
