Best Monitor for P3D V4.1? Please help

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I need some help on choosing the best monitor in market for P3D V4. Between a 4k and an ultrawide (21:9) with 1440p resolution, which would bring the best immersion and performance? I´m thinking of buying a 34" display with a refresh rate greater than 100Hz and G-sync technology (I have a GTX 1070). Is there any other spec that I should include in my search? Perhaps response time?

From my research I´ve learned that performance with a 4k resolution isn´t affected drastically since P3D´s engine is mostly CPU bound. Is this true? Will I see a lot of difference between 4k and 1440p? Does a 21:9 aspect ratio has big benefits over a 16:9 with regards to immersion?

Please help...

Nvidia GTX 1070

Some things to bear in mind. A 34" 21:9 display is pretty small and the aspect ratio is skinny - hence you will probably need to use a head tracker for best effect. The upside is it has fewer pixels than the 4K, so performance will be better. A 34" 4K will have more dpi and a better aspect ratio but it's a lot of pixels so your performance may suffer. It's also small for a 4K - I'd go 40-55" if I was you.

I use a 4K 32'' IPS Monitor. -> Brilliant colors, but not exactly cheap.

Do you play other stuff than P3D? If so, a 1070 is too weak for 4K. Also P3D has some very GPU heavy stuff like Overcast, MSAA/SSAA settings, Dynamic light... Hard choice for you here. I mean 4K is 4K and it is great! But also very taxing on the system.

But if you really go for 4K I would also go like @MarkDH with a bigger screen. This adds to the immersion! I have a 65'' 4K screen as TV and I always imagine how great it would be as my P3D monitor :-) But the wife will kill me if I move the PC to the living room.

I have a 37' ratio 16:9 1440p, this solution is for me very well because

  • 16:9  have on all aircrafts by the ratio a sight on gauges.
  • 1440p make the details clear and sharp but so don't spend vs 4k a lot of process graphics and cpu usages... 4k is well only for very large screen with a high level graphic card... Keep in mind, that is the dimension of the square of the dot you can see on your screen the important. With 1440p on 37' our eyes don't be able to feel the raster of the screen... So details feeling is fine.
  • to have a 1440p have a second advantage is the texture levels needed is the halt of a common screen (with 32bit for memories was important)

Thank you so much for replying. I really won't be using the monitor for anything else than P3D. Last month I was trying to decide between buying a new monitor or going for the VR experience. Long story short, I ended up with an HTC Vive which can be a nice hardware for flying  VFR on ORBX´s sceneries (at least for now), but since I´m a real pilot most of the times I fly IFR on complex airplanes following checklists, reading charts, managing the FMS, etc and theses tasks are very hard to do while in VR. I guess I´ll stick to a monitor until VR gets better.

I guess your recommendation leaves me with 2 options: Keep my 1070 GPU and go for a 1440p or buy both a 4k and a new GPU (perhaps a 1080?). Since technology is changing almost on a monthly basis, I would really like to invest in something for the long term. Do you think I would stay behind if I go for the 1440p option? Remember, my only intention is to play P3D.

One last thing I forgot to tell, I have a new Samsung 40" 1080 TV which I could use for this purpose. Do you think it'll do the job until VR technology gets more advanced? Sure this option will save me a lot of money, but what about performance and immersion? Will I still enjoy a good immersion?

Thank you very much

Thanks for your help. This information will definitely help narrow my search. I own a 40" 1080 Samsung TV that`s not being used in my home, do you think I could use that just for P3D? By doing so I will save a lot of money, but I really want to have a good immersion. Will a TV do the job?

Yes, you could use it but it won't be great. At 40" it will be fuzzy - I have tried it myself and went back to my old 3 x 19" setup for a few more years because it was much sharper. This is a good tool for comparing screens. You will see that a 40" 1080p screen only has 50dpi, which isn't enough. Anything over about 90dpi will look good.

Thank you very much. Should I be worried about refresh rates? How many Hz would you recommend for P3D alone?

Can anybody tell if its worth buying a 144 Hz monitor for P3D? Even if the game isn`t taking advantage of this technology right now, will it be good to future-proof myself by buying such refresh rates? Or is 60Hz way enough for P3D?

Mine screen is a 60Hz and I'm very satisfied with... Now I don't have knowledges about the ressources asked to the graficcard with more Hz... Is a question for specialists

My 2 bobs worth.. go as big as you dare.

A 4K TV delivers crisp clear quality and allows refresh rates as low as 25hz resulting in smooth flying when frames are locked to the same. This also means the CPU and GPU can produce all the eye candy stuff we’ve all come to love and expect without demanding high FPS.

I have a 65in 4K Samsung and love it. Size does matter...

Your GPU/CPU will also be a limiting factor so do your homework. I have an OC 4.6 CPU running a Titan Pascal GPU which copes very well on the big screen, almost everything maxed out and not one FPS drop with dynamic lighting enabled. (In a PMDG wagon)

I bought a 4K Pimax VR headset recently and I must say it’s where the futures headed. I’m absolutely thrilled with it particularly with Flyinside now working in P3DV4.1. I’ve up’d the Target Resolution within the FI ini and now I’ve got good image quality in the cockpit. I will add though my GPU is taking an absolute pounding now and nearly gets to 100% usage. I have needed to reduce some settings for VR. 😫

All boils down to what you want and what your partner allows.
