FSLabs A320 or upcoming AS A320 for v4?

Featured Replies

I guess in real life if they were doing something like that, they'd link her up to someone sat in the same seat an A320 with the same fittings from the same fleet, so that person could literally say, 'you're looking for grey the round knob ten degrees to your right on the uppermost panel with the little blue triangle on it' or 'look for the big panel with numbers and alphabetical letter buttons on it just ahead of the throttle levers, it looks like a big pocket calculator', and stuff like that. Saying things such as 'look for the MCDU' is just not gonna be helpful to someone unfamiliar with an aeroplane, and you can imagine how scared someone would be in that circumstance, although Joe's calm voice would certainly be a plus point.

This is simply untrue sir.   I have this in writing (email) from Mathijs that this is the case.   I found myself falling foul of this "rule" just over a year ago.

There was a case where the pilot passed away in a Cessna some years ago where the passenger had to land the plane. They called up a flight instructor who then talked him down.
Very nice docu of it available on YouTube, even including some real world footage of the accident.

Greetings from the 737 flightdeck!

Had to sort of do that myself once; an instructor flew me and him into a thunderstorm in an SZD-50-3 over Derwent, he freaked out when we started getting pushed down by the storm downdraft, handed me the controls and then he froze up, I realised that when he stopped talking to me since I was sat in front of him and couldn't see him and asked his advice, to which there was no reply. I had to fly us out of the storm, regain enough altitude to get us over some hills, fly us back to the airfield and then land, all the while in that thunderstorm. But at the time I was a low hours pilot already with a licence and it was supposed to be an advanced handling lesson (turned out to be a bit more advanced than I thought lol), so not quite as bad as being a non-pilot.

Should have heard the language out of me on that occasion after I got us down safely, can't write any of that here, but one of the words rhymes with tanker lol.

Hello all,

This is certainly an interesting thread to follow. I was wondering does the FSLabs allow a company route to imported from software such as PFPX? I was also wondering if the steering tiller is easy to operate.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Yes to both Qs.

Import a route--in theory, yes.  I have not actually been able to make it work once...keep getting a "invalid flight plan" error despite following the instructions very closely.

Steering tiller is, IMHO, the most problematic of the control axes...the FSL A320X uses an exponential function that increases the amount of NWS angle in ever greater amounts as you increase the input, and at sharper turn angles above about 10 deg of NWS travel it is exceedingly difficult to control smoothly.  It can be improved with some changes to the tiller calibration (application of negative control slope) in FSUIPC.

Thanks Bob, I did actually buy it today and see what you mean about the steering tiller. Do you know how to calibrate it in FSUIPC?

Thanks,

Jonathan

In the FSUIPC axis tab, move the joystick axis you will use for NWS (I use the twist-grip axis on my stick), and once that is selected, tick the "Send to FS as normal axis" radio button and then tick the first box underneath that (lower left quadrant of window), and select "Steering Set"

Then go to joystick calibration tab, scroll to page 9 of 11, and set up the nullzones and full travel limits per the documentation.  Select "slope" and set a negative slope there (I use -4)  This will negate much of the nonlinearity in the tiller axis while leaving the rudder axis handling alone.

You also need to have the use rudder as NWS steering option set to OFF in page 3 of the FSL A320 MCDU Options.

Thanks for that detailed response. I couldn’t find the radio button in FSUIPC. Where abouts is it?

A "radio button" is the standard term for what is essentially a round checkbox...e.g. the dots to the left of the three options "send direct to FSUIPC calibration", "send to normal FS axis" etc

Thanks Bob, I’m hopeless with all this. I understand, I’ll try it tonight. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it.

Kind Regards,

Jonathan.

I was reviewing the AS A320 thread again this morning and came across a tid-bit that I somehow missed when it was posted over there (last Tuesday on page 12). It looks like, at least initially, that the AS bus will not have variable lighting in the virtual cockpit. The AS staff worked very hard to reassure themselves that it's a feature none of us need or use, but I like to fly at night and this is a high-value feature for me. Chalk one up for the FSL bus.

One of the first things I do is set the lighting to suit. It’s never the same and very time of day dependent.
