J3 Cub Ride

My daughter (8 years old) is now really starting to get into flying (ALL RIGHT!)And... she is nuts about J3 Cubs. She has tee shirts with them on it, she reads about them, she and I are building a model of one. But... I can't afford to buy one (well, really, I can't justify spending upwards of 35K on one, anyway), but I would love to get her a ride in one. Does anyone know of a company or flight school in the NorthEast or Southern California or Arizona (Phoenix) regions where they offer rides in a J3?TIARich

Contact your local EAA flying club and ask about the "Young Eagles" program if someone in the area clubs has a Cub and participates in the Young Eagles program, you can get connected for a ride :-)

I was at the EAA museum a couple of weeks ago, and looked through the book that listed all of the pilots and the planes. I didn't see one that had a J3.ThanksRich

Try asking on this forum, http://forums.flightinfo.com/The problem with the J-3 is it's only a 2 seat plane, she'd have to be up there alone with the pilot, wouldn't you rather go with her?A J-5 or PA-12 Cub can hold 3 and you could go along.

It's just that she really likes the J3. The best case scenario would be to find a school that would check me out in a J3, then I could take her up, but those schools are as rare as hens teeth.I will check out that forum, though.Thanks for the info.

These are oh, so tempting...But, as much as I would dearly love to have a J3, for that kind of price, I am looking at getting a C-170. Thanks for the info, though.

Did you check on the CT Cub rides ? Anything that might work out ?

The problem with the CT rides is that this guy spends the winter in FL with his Cub and the Stearman (Poor, poor, fellow) then only brings the Stearman up to CT for the late Spring/Summer/Fall. The place in Stroudsburg PA might work out, however.But... I might have a line on a Cub in the Southern Cal. area... stay tuned...

Sun 'n Fun is coming up quick, I bet you could get her a ride in a nice J-3 down in Lakeland.You're really going to disapoint your little girl by buying a Cessna.I have about 1500 hours towing banners in 160 horse J-3s and 180 horse Super Cubs, the most fun flying I ever did, really miss flying a Cub.

While we were in the LA area this past week, I made a few phone calls, called in a few favors, and found a friend of a friend at Santa Paula that has a J3.We took our Daughter to Santa Paula Thursday Morning, had breakfast at Langsdon's, then went to the hanger, where our daughter met the owner of the J3. We helped get the Cub out of the hanger, and this Lady showed Katie the preflight, and then buckled her in. They took off and had about a :45 minute flight.Man, I got to tell you, I have been flying since I was 16 soloed at 17, Been a CFI since 1981, soloed and graduated more pilots than I can remember, but... the single most thrilling thing I have EVER seen was that smile on my daughter's face when they taxied up after the flight. First thing she said to me? "Dad, can we get a Cub? Pleeeeeeez?"I've created a monster! :) She just kept asking us "Do we have to leave?" "When can we come back?" "When can we get a Cub?"When we get the pix, I will try and post one or two.I am still walking on air!(And just to top off the morning? I got a hop in a Yak 52!)

I found my Uncle's J3 that he bought new in 1946 ! Just checked the serial numbers for a match. He's in his 90s but is VERY excited to hear the news as he never lost his love of this aircraft and always wondered what happened to it.Now if I can only connect the two and get him a ride in his old girl !Best,
