Only heat shimmer I have ever seen has been on a jet aircraft.  On a P-51, where would the shimmer appear from and what direction would It go?  Can you show a picture of what you are describing?

Looks like a smoke effect.  Anything in your aircraft.cfg under [smoke]?

While flying, press the I key.  That turns on any smoke effect.

Post your [Smoke] section.  Make sure you have all of the listed Effects in your FSX/Effects folder..

With all of those effects in the [smoke system] I would surely

Expect to see something happen when hitting hitting the

I (eye) key.  Does the manual have any other info on the

smoke/heat shimmer?

I agree with spokes2112.  It will be a matter of learning how to turn on your [smokesystem].

A2A is using an undocumented set of gauge commands to fully control the [smokesystem] section.
You might want to add your shimmering effects as a light in the [Lights] section instead.

???
