FSX OOM even with 1GB Free VAS

Recommended Posts

If you monitor your VAS during a flight using the FSUIPC utility as described in the AVSIM CTD Guide, you can see your VAS fluctuating constantly.  On approach it will go down to maybe 200MB's then shoot back up to over 1GB, then suddenly back down to 400MB's.  If you have high settings and using commercial eye-candy scenery, and lots of Autogen, you will be lucky to touchdown and may not even be able to taxi if you do land.  It all depends on the scenario, your views, the weather, the number of AI in the area, and then the settings.  There is no solution.  FSX is an old program that is not optimized to work well with current OS's but still does a pretty good job most of the time.  The eye-candy at airports and some photoscenery and Autogen are not VAS friendly.  They tend to use the space fairly fast.

So from what I understand you are saying even though my VAS indication is clearly showing that it is a full GB away from being at the 4GB limit, that during the approach and taxi in the VAS is spiking which won't be measured by process explorer? And that spike is causing the OOM?

Signed Jon.

That is correct.  1GB is not very much especially if you have high settings and flying into an eye-candy airport or scenery and/or heavy weather.  For instance, here is an fsuipc.txt (log) of a flight I took from FlightBeam KSFO to Orbx KSAN in real weather in the PMDG 738:

Repeating what was said earlier. 32 bit apps can't page the full 4GB of address space. You'll get 3GB at best.

Secondly, the memory can't be partially allocated. If the application is currentry using 2GB and issues a request for another 500MB, it will be issued. If the application were to requesr for 1.1GB, it will fail right then and there without going above 2GB usage. Your log is showing history not trends nor requested load.

Clearly an oversimplified example, but it's another way of saying that you can only sspeculate the limited information you have. This is much wisdom here in checking the guide and reducing detail sliders. This is the limitation of the platform that so many have learned to cope with over the years.

I don't know if the FSX application provides logging that includes memory allocation. I've never had a reason to look at that, but it is something that I have dealt with at work. However with my systems I know exactly how memory is used our at least how it is designed to be used. FSX is a black box.

Even if you found a log that told you by how much the memory limits were exceeded, the above advice remains exactly the same. Also see definition of insanity. :)

Ok well I'll start turning some sliders down and also try and get you guys an fsuipc log, plus several of the other pieces of advice given on this forum, thanks for all the help it just really confused me how it would simply always OOM at Toronto even without approaching the 4GB limit, but the spiking makes sense i guess.

Only 1 answer.  I had the same and began questioning my involvement in my beloved hobby: Flight simulation.  I was miserable, day after day.  I was ready to move on to something other than Flight simulation.  Then, after reading about the many happy simmers out there, I decided to do what they were doing.

The answer, and the only answer in my humble opinion, is to go to a 64 bit program:  Prepar3d version 4.1   Absolutely NO MORE OOM's.

End of story.

It is uneconomical and unreasonable to pay a whole lot of bucks for a swap when you can fix the broken thing easily and constrain yourself to the KISS principle. Just read the AVSIM FSX Config Guide and don't run every feature and addon at once and at peak quality.

it is totally worth the cost to buy P3D and re buy PMDG products,

Why re buy PMDG? I can't afford to pay twice for 747, MD-11 and T7

It's your decision.  Yes, it's more money, but now I am finally enjoying my flight simming experience.  Kinda like a good steak....costs more, but a cheap steak isn't worth it at all.  You can't escape the fact that a 64 bit program is what is necessary for flight simming today.  Too much great scenery, great planes, great eye candy.  32 bits can't cut it.  The longer you wait to move, the more it will cost because you'll still be investing good money in FSX.   Just my opinion...take it for what it's worth.

Jon, if you don't already have it, get FSX:SE - it's built with a more efficient and better-optimised compiler and includes a fix to flush all levels of detail in the terrain cache. It's usually significantly cheaper in sales after Christmas. As has already been suggested, use DX10 preview mode with Steve's DX10 Scenery Fixer. Also, you've probably already read it as you have PMDG aircraft but this is worth another read: https://support.precisionmanuals.com/kb/a108/vas-management-stopping-out-of-memory-oom-errors.aspx

+2. It's simply not possible to use the PMDG 777 (or, for that matter, most any complex aircraft) with the sliders set that high and avoid the OOM problem. As spesimen said above, non-contiguous memory space is an issue that can't be overcome. And FSX is notorious for poor memory management.....Doug

The OOM solution is a 64bit flight sim - if you must fly the PMDG 777, then Prepar3D version 4 (64-bit) is your only option.

I thought AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide is the solution so far.

Regarding on Prepar3D v4 (64-bit), will work with all FSX Add-on payware and freeware? It sounds like we can add some sceneries only and to purchase aircrafts again as PMDG, Level-D, and others ......

Going back to AVSIM FSX CG is the right option if not the best and with huge savings.

If we load FSX with only the airports in flight I guess we don't have OOM, do we?

Airports only load if in a certain radius of your aircraft.  Photoscenery will load no matter where in the world it is located and whether you have a flight plan over it or not.

You mean the Default sceneries right? Not the scenery payware correct?

When I ran Process Monitor during a flight I did not see any of my FSDT or any other payware airport scenery loading.   I did see some stuff from Orbx loading, like at Friday Harbor but that's from the bgl's in the Scenery/World/Scenery.
