GEX for P3Dv4

Recommended Posts

One last question. I've built a new system and have started installation of P3Dv4.1 + add-ons.

Currently, I have installed all ORBX titles except FTX Global Base (textures) and FTX Global Trees. At this point it should be possible to install GEP3D without any problems. Right?

If you have FTX Regions and airports, you should be able to replace your default textures with GEP3D.

One caveat, though, is that there are some ORBX Airports (and a large number of freeware airport enhancements) that are not designed to install into one of the ORBX regions, but instead to areas covered by FTX Global (e.g. Stockholm, Innsbruck, Telluride, Eagle County etc).  Those may not blend so well with GEP3D, as the colorization can be significantly different between FTXG and GEP3D.

Agree but FTX/Orbx indicates the compatibility.  I know, in the case of KSAN and KPSP, it has a switch for whether you are using it with FTX Global or FTX SoCal.

I messed it up! At least it looks like. If I open FTX central and close it directly afterwards without any changes therein, my GEP3D settings are set back and I have to enable it again in GEP3D interface. Is this normal?

DO you somehow have FTX Global active in FTX Central? I do not have this issue - I can run FTX Central with no effect at all on GEXP3D. Something isn't right. You might want to check with Nick on the GEX forums if you cannot resolve it.

I already asked for assistance in GEX/GEP forums.

I swear, I have never ever installed FTX Global (Base Pack)  on my current system, but I have all other stuff from ORBX (regions+airports+vector+ global airports + OLC NA and OLC EU). Maybe OLC titles are the culprit. Or maybe I have done this "re-migration for unified lclookup" in FTX central, this could be the problem too perhaps. I continue discussion in F1 forum and report back if sth. interesting comes out.

Thank you all for your help!

I have that same combination Harry and do not have the issue so something else is causing it. Hope it gets sorted for you.

Meanwhile, I uninstalled P3D and GEP via program settings. Then I deleted scenery and texture folders which have not been removed by uninstall procedure. I checked if there is any lclookup file within P3D installation folder (except ORBX folder). I also removed the LM folders in "program data", "local" and "roaming". Then I reinstalled P3Dv4.1 and GEP3D.

Unfortunately, it is still the same erroneous behavior. I open GEP interface, do the backup and activate GEP and two UTX entries the I get three green dots. Everything looks good so far. But in P3D I am not sure if anything has changed. I go back to GEP3D interface which now looks as it was deactivated again. Red dot at GEP entry, all others greyed out.

I have to emphasize that I have not touched FTX central since re-installation.

What else could I do?

OMG. STUPID old man I am!

I have just realized that I need to run the GEP as administrator. To open it normally does not work, even in admin account, which is the only account I have on my system. UAC is zero. Win10 is really special. Sometimes it is necessary to right-click and run as administrator even in accounts which have full admin rights. I forgot about this ... Shame on me.

If you already have so many Orbx titles, why not just buy Global base? Your airports are designed to match it, GEX is not. Global base is currently a much more popular product, and there's lots of experience with using it in P3D v4. GEX has a couple of fans on this thread, but in P3D v4 it's a new and unproven option. If you didn't own a large stable of Orbx products, I'd consider it to be a more difficult decision, though the market seems to have preferred FTX Global over previous iterations of GEX by a fairly large margin.

I already own FTX Global Base. I simply wanted to see how GEP3D fits. It has been said some times that GEP/UTX can look better that FTXG Base/Vector. FTX regions + regions airport work anyway. It maybe only FTXG airports don't blend perfectly with GEP, but this is also true for many other add-on airports (eg KDEN from FB).

And plus, I have 30 days time to test if I am satisfied with GEP.

Copy that. I note you said global not installed, I incorrectly inferred that you didn't own it.

re: "said some times that GEP/UTX can look better that FTXG Base/Vector". I'm certain that it will look better in some areas, and it's possible that it's overall a better product - but previous versions have been a lot less popular than FTX Global. I'd be interested in any data that shows that this new P3D v4-compatible version looks better or performs better than FTX.

You are kidding right? OK, my data shows that GEX/UTX combination looks much better than FTXG. Please don't ask for proof as I'm tired of lending my eyes out.

There is NO way you are going to get anything other than people' s opinions, which I guess are a form of data. FTXG is a very popular product but so is GEX. I have both on different systems and personally I prefer GEX/UTX both visually and performance wise. I find the FTXG colors too overstated and not as realistic as GEX

You, quite obviously prefer FTGX - we are both correct because it is ENTIRELY a matter of personal preference.

Glad you got it sorted out Harry!
