v4 on a new rig and Windows 10

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!
After many, many hours of overtime, I just recently made an upgrade (To give my little brother my old rig) and the OS is Windows 10 (yuck #WIndows7forever).

Specs are:
i7-7700K (No OC)

MSI GTX1070 8GB

16GB DDR4-3200

LED 1920x1080@60Hz

Anyone with a similar setup, I'm new to Windows 10, and honestly the P3D deal entirely...i;ve been with MSFS since 2001. I'll try all opinions on what I should do based off your own experiences.

  • What should I do in the P3D.CFG? (Affinity Mask, line edits, etc...)
  • Specific sim settings?
  • Any changes I should do to Windows 10?
  • What should I have for dinner tonight?
  • Literally anything to optimize my experience?

Many thanks to my fellow simmers.

hi Gabriel,

P3D is different from FSX you don't need to fiddle with config files, etc, just install and go.

Once loaded change Pd3 display settings to your liking and needs.

Get nice airports add ons, a nice AI package, good weather engine and a nice plane to fly, plenty of options out there.

You don't need to change any setting on Windows 10.

Best Regards,

Simbol

I use OOShutup to prevent automatic Win 10 updates which have, several times, broken my simulator.

HT on and AM=245 or 253 (I use 245) is a good place for me with a 7700K.  Strongly consider overclocking the CPU.

Start with 4xMSAA and work from there.  Be aware of the big increase in GPU workload with SSAA in clouds and with dynamic lighting.

Lasagna

Regards

I agree that O&O Shutup 10 is a good app to make Win 10 more private but I wouldn't recommend preventing automatic updates - the WannaCry ransomeware springs to mind here as an update prevented it for many. I accept the security updates but not driver updates, which is easy to set. Most people don't have any problems with the updates but those who do are, understandably, very vocal about it.

CaptainGabe - I changed to Win 10 reluctantly but now prefer it over Win 7. I've only had one minor webcam problem with Win 10 (easily sorted) and have had updates turned on since installing the first version. Most people seem to forget that Win 7 had it's fair share of problems over the years. There are plenty of references online explaining what to turn off in Win10 for better privacy. However, I'd leave security updates on and, in the unlikely event that you have a problem just uninstall the update that caused it. You're much less likely to have problems with a clean install of Win 10 rather than an upgrade from an earlier version of the OS. Just make sure that you get Win 10-compatible drivers for all of your hardware (but disable automatic driver updates in the OS).

Using win 10 since the first day it was available. Never had issues regarding P3D.

Only NVIDIA Managed it one time to destroy my system with a faulty gpu driver update.

6700k (OC to 4.6) Galax 1070 and 16GB RAM. Started out with P3D v2 a couple of years back and now on P3D v4. this is my personal opinion...

DO NOT TOUCH THAT CFG

(Alright, I have ONE config tweak - TRANSLUCENT_SHADOW_TEXTURE_SIZE=1024 that's all!)

Settings wise here's what I'm running. (addons PTA, Orbx, FSL, PMDG, A2A)

Honestly, don't use SSAA. Your system will crawl when you have Dynamic Lighting on (it still amazes me when people use it, considering the technology)

oh! and Macaroni Cheese ;)

Here are some good and easy to follow recommendations for streamlining Windows 10 settings and services without resorting extremes. I'm using most of these settings:

Thank you EVERYONE for your responses! I am fiddling with the AA settings and considering doing a few things from the Windows 10 links just for my own convenience. I really appreciate the input.
Cheers!
