i7 7700K just bought

Recommended Posts

So I purchased an i7 7700K and a Z270 MB for a new build but still in component form.

Now I see the i7 8700K and am thinking to maybe just sell the boxed 7700K/Z270 MB and start with this so at least I get a great new machine well into the future.

Opinions?

If you can get full price for the resale then ya go for the 8700K.  But otherwise the 7700k is still a wonderful cpu!

P.S.  thanks for all your freeware airport contributions over the years!

I would think it depends on where you're coming from.

I built an 8700k rig and came from a 2700k. In most situations, I saw doubled the performance.

I only went for the 8700k because it was the best at the time. I didn't see the point of going for something that's already old news when I could spend a few extra bucks for the latest and greatest.

Thanks Ryan. Real world priorities means output has slowed to a trickle. Will not get full price for the 7700/MB but maybe 75%.

I am coming from a i7 3700K so I am going to see a jump in performance with the 7700K but the 8700K seems to be even bigger.

I replaced my fried 6700k with a 7700k on Asus Z170 board.

Can't say i'm at all impressed with the 7700k. Temps were waaaay better with the 6700.

Don't really see why Intel released the chip.

Nor does anyone else. Intel has reached an impasse in significantly improving performance.

Unless you absolutely need those 12 Logical Processors vs. 8, you should not look for a lot more performance advantage from the 8700K... if any at all.

HTH,

That is an interesting comment. I was looking at the 8700K performance on the pass-mark charts and saw significantly improved numbers over 7700K.

It Turbo's a bit higher that's all. 4.5 GHz, as opposed to 4.2 GHz.   Architecture is the same, Intel just OC it a bit for you. Hence why it's a bit warmer. I guess it does have Optane support and all that.

You would have to compare the two CPU's, at the same ambient temp, frequency etc. But of course you cant do that now. I would bet it's not that much hotter when clocked the same.

Look at the single core (SC Mixed) scores of the two CPU's, both stock speeds and overclocks.  Not that much difference.

Again, if the extra 4 LP's are important to you then the move to the 8700K may be what you want.

Went with the purchase of the i7 8700K and the GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Gaming 5. Interesting that the price of the Mobo went up $30 after my purchase...hopefully can sell the i7 and the mobo.
