MIG-31 ...sound and video quality is outstanding!

Recommended Posts

What a beast! In the modern air warfare environment, that's probably the most capable and dangerous Russian aircraft, even more than the Flanker, having a more powerful radar and longer range missiles.

...only if the missiles can guarantee a kill.. If, IF, the 31 has to close to dogfighting range, then it's probably all over.... for the MiG - it's a long range interceptor. Unless it's dogfighting an F-35 LOL!!

The Flanker can win such a knife fight..

No denying the Foxhound looks a proper beast though IMHO. It's as if the designers went to the aftermarket exhaust shop and said "Nyet to fart cans, we want dustbins!" The tailpipes are huge

That's the reason I said in the modern warfare environment. :-)

Contrary to common belief, the traditional dogfight is actually very rare in modern air combat, where the majority of encounters resolves in BVR engagements. In the last 30 years, only 10% of air to air kills has been achieved with guns or rear-aspect IR missiles.

In present air warfare, a heavy long range fighter is (statistically) at an advantage compared to a pure dogfighter. Infact, as weird as it may appear to us, the prediction of military think-tanks is that the next generation of fighters will look much more like a B-2 (big, stealth, subsonic, heavy loadout) than a F-22 or a Su-27.

I've been astonished as well to learn about these facts, there's a very interesting publication on the matter, freely available here:
