Looking to get X-Plane 11

Recommended Posts

I've been playing with the X-Plane 11 demo and leaning towards buying it up.  The discount on Steam certainly makes it look attractive.

If I go the Steam vs Direct route, can I still install scenery, aircraft, etc, that isn't through Steam (exp: 3rd party, freeware, etc.)?.  I would expect yes, but want to verify before I commit.

Frankly, my choice would be direct purchase, but does X-Plane 11 ever go on sale other than through Steam?

Third party add-ons will install fine with the Steam version of XP11.  I did and I had no problem with the steam version.

I  have never seen  a sale from Laminar Research, I still buy from them for the support to the simulator. That's just me though.

As a recent purchaser of XP11 myself, I've learned that some addon payware aircraft that supposedly work in xp11 don't.  They were made for an earlier version and haven't been properly updated.  The site XPlane.org has payware vendor forums so take a glance at those before committing your cash.

Add-on aircrafts that are only work with XP10 are clearly indicated.  Those that work in XP11 are also clearly indicated at the org store or elsewhere.  If you buy an add-on that is only for XP10, it may work in XP11, but that is entirely your choice.  I have never seen an add-on aircraft that advertises as working in XP11 and does not.  I have seen folks complaining that their XP 10 aircrafts don't work right in XP 11.  However that's entirely unjustified.

Just a note that if you buy the steam version you will NOT get beta updates.  For instance when xp11.10 was coming out... I think we went maybe 2 months from 11.05 to 11.10 final.  You'll be on the old version until the new version is final.

Completely untrue. Some users DO have problems with XP 10 era aircraft, myself being one of them. Experiences vary. But I have found that since XP has moved onto 11.11, a lot of the aircraft now work ok again. I am guessing that some of the middle versions between 11.0 and 11.1 had problems. I could not fly the SAAB or the IXEG aircraft at one point, so totally gave up on them. I have recently tried the IXEG again in 11.11 and it now seems to work perfectly. I have not retried the SAAB, but I suspect that it will now also work. The new version of the SAAB is due out any day now, so any problems in that area will be over any way.

And to the OP - I would not worry about the cost of XP. It is nothing compared to the amount you might spend of getting plugins and payware aircraft, each of which will most likely cost you more than XP itself. I would not go with Steam either - you lose control of your XP version and you get less updates.

Not entirely true. You don't have access to the majority of the beta builds, but depending on where you stand, that is not a loss. You eventually get the same stable version at the end of the beta run.

Not completely true, at least in one case I'm aware of. Carenado v10 planes sold through the .org web store are still listed under "Requirements" as "X-Plane 10 or X-Plane 11."

That's a clear indication that the model will work in either version, but many of the Carenado v10 models have serious issues in XP11. Especially those with turboprop engines, since this was one of the big areas that changed in XP11.

For example, you'll get engine fire and failed generators in the current (v10) Carenado PC-12 if you run it in XP11. This can be mitigated with tweaks to the .acf file in Planemaker, but it's clearly a band-aid solution until Carenado releases the actual v11 version of this plane. And yet the .org store still says it's for "X-Plane 10 or X-Plane 11."

Interestingly... on Carenado's own storefront web site, the same PC-12 model is listed as "Only for X-Plane 10.5x." That's a more honest representation than the .org store. They list other models as XP10/11, which means it's a v10 model that will work without major issues in XP11, but it's not a completely purpose-built v11 model, and may not hit the performance numbers exactly. And you'll pay full price for the full XP11 version when it's updated.

So basically, it's buyer beware during this transition period. Especially with Carenado planes that are in this weird zone right now, where they haven't updated most of their fleet to v11 yet, and they're charging full price for new v11 models without upgrade discounts. Most other plane designers are being clear about what version you're buying, like the fully-upgraded v11 planes from STMA, or the various Dreamworks helicopters. Just make sure you know what you're buying.

Yes Steam version can get beta updates. I am currently in version 11.20vr1.

If you want beta update, right click on your steam X-Plane 11 go to properties, in the tab update use high priority and tab betas use public. beta. You will see your X-plane 11downloading the files. If you want to go back to the last update, just reset your beta tab setting to  NONE- op-out and go back to 11.11r2.

i own the stand alone version and actually considered buying the steam version as well to support the developers and steam downloads x-plane 11 ten times faster, x-plane is so much easier to manage, almost every addon is drag and drop with only a few installers, moving scenery around is a breeze, if you run out of space, you simply drag your scenery to another drive, create a shortcut where you put the scenery and just put the scenery shortcut in your custom scenery folder. plugin's, scenery, planes are all pretty much drag and drop. out of the 18 planes i own for x-plane 11 only one requires an installer which is the ixeg 737.I only use p3d for my pmdg and flight sim labs planes. with fsx-se still installed for the quality wings 787,146 and 757 still lagging behind.flight factor is coming out witth the a320 soon, can't wait for that one, x-plane has the  best md80,757,767,a350 there is. the jar design a320 and a330 aren't bad to fly.there is a ton of free scenery and plugins, hd 4 mesh was just released for free for the majority of the world, almost everything from p3d there is something comparable in x-plane11.of course x-plane 11 supports native vr now. i will post some good links to some software for free and payware.active sky is actively working on a weather engine for x-plane 11 as well.i listed the flight factor a320, but it's not released yet, i posted what i own or suggested scenery, planes and plugins.
