PTA lighting too dark

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am wondering how to improve the darkness in the sim, I am running P3D V4.1 and tried multiple presets but it is just too dark. I have attached a screen shot at 12PM on the 27th December in Luton EGGW and it is just too dark. I have changed the terrain lighting settings in PTA and it does not seem to change. I also had the lighting settings on high and it is still dark.

Thanks,

I re-pasted your image with BBcode so we can all see it.

pta.jpg

Have a try with my latest preset (26_01): http://www.nzfsim.org/index.php?dsp=PTA

Try other presets from other sources. This could tell you whether it's a PTA thing or something badly set up in P3D itself. Often, it can be something as simple as not having HDR enabled in P3D.

Hi Adam,

I will try that preset tonight but I am still expecting it to be too dark. I've tried many different presets but none seem to change the terrain lighting, I've even put that on the maximum setting and it doesn't seem to change much.

Thanks,

Stephen

I found this one quite nice

https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/527099-saturated-colors-experiments-with-pta-and-textures/

It's a combination of exchange textures and PTA presets. He will send you the link on request.

As always, it's a matter of taste, but I find this pretty much the only version not too dark, and I tried quite a lot ones.

Kind regards

Hi Adam

I just tried that preset and it looks even darker than the screenshot I posted. Interestingly, in summer it looks very bright so it must be a seasonal thing, is there any way I can increase the sunlight?

In winter clouds and ground look to dark compared to reality.

That is why I have my 12 months presets. I have compensated for that .

Indeed. I think P3D not only gets the seasonal palette wrong (it totally screws up the onset of darkness in the twilight zones (early morning and late afternoon).

I'm New Zealand based, so spend much of my time in P3D in the southern hemisphere (currently a real stonker of a summer). I can't be bothered to switch PTA profiles (and restart P3D) every time I nip over to a location in the northern hemisphere, so I simply switch the season to "Summer" in P3D.

Stephen - I tried your EGGW location with my preset. Even at mid-day, it was only barely acceptable. As you say, "Summer" is fine though.

Adam.

To use my 12 months presets set in the southern hemisphere I simply add 6 months to the presets and then I can fly there too with the correct settings in every month ( Eg : december + 6 = june )

Gerard, I am using your 12 month presets which I like very much. I do have one request. I see the settings you have for the "Urban areas lighting at night". With my setup and monitor the night lighting for the ground textures is just a little too dark. I would like to brighten it just a little bit. I don't understand those settings. I am used to the 1.0 to 15.0 setting for brightness and tweaking up the saturation from 2.0. How would I do this with your settings? I don't want to screw up anything and want to keep what you have in there but just adjust it a bit to increase the brightness. Thank you

Just up the 0.96 in the brightness expression.

By 0.10 at the time is an easy way to start.

Quick question, what does this setting do in the "Urban areas lighting at night": cb_Altitude/15000

Is it the altitude in which you need to be under the lights to get brighter?

Up to 15000m ( 49200 ft ) the lights will be gradually less bright
