Keep Windows 7 or move to Windows 10

Hi Guys,

Im reinstalling everything from scratch, now that Prepar3d version 4.2 is out, I would like to know whats would be the best option, 

Keep Windows 7 Professional or Move to Windows 10,

now I guess not of all addons are Windows 10 Compatible right?

W10 works perfectly for me. In fact I noticed increases in performance when I upgraded. I can't think of 1 single add-on that won't work on W10.

Hi Folks,

Win10 without a doubt - just don't do the "upgrade" - do the full OS wipe - - - I had to go back an reinstall clean after attempting the upgrades - on multiple machines...

I use Win10. I have orbx, pmdg, captainsim, pro atc x, pilot2atc, pfpx, majestic, gsx, simplecam, pta, fsrealtime (I've probably forgotten something). No problems at all.

If you plan to network with other PCs I do not recommend W10. I could not make a W10 client talk to my W7 P3D server. I tried and tried, and eventually gave up. I am back with W7.

No doubt others will give you the opposite advice!

Win 10 without doubt. It is already 2,5 years old. Why would you stick to an OS that was released in 2009?

Same reason, some people stick with a flightsim platform, which is 10 years old

However, I believe that Win 7 is better for particularly FS2004 and elderly hardware. In your case, whilst your hardware was recently superceded with the last round of Intel CPUs, it is still more than competent to handle  P3Dv4 and I think Win 10 would be a better choice ... think DX11/12 at least, which I believe is not available for Win7.

There are lots of divided opinions on this subject on this and other forums and I think each side of the argument/debate has its merits.

Generally, as a personal opinion, I would go with "old OS with old Hardware and new OS with newer hardware"

Whichever OS you opt for, PLEASE follow Scott613s advice and do a clean install preferably with a re-format prior if that is convenient. (I have a dedicated 256gb SSD for the OS/Antivirus only and reformat with any change of OS of which I have done a few in the last couple of months)

Just to give the opposite advice lol! 

Running 4 win 10 boxes on a 777 simavionics setup using a combo of simconnect/widefs with no issues

I was weary of leaving windows 7 but haven't regretted it ever

Win 10 Pro or Enterprise. They will allow you defer 'feature' updates (Service Packs and major updates) for up to a year and 'quality updates' (security updates) for up to 35 days.

I've been running Enterprise in this way for quite some time with no problems at all.

If you like the prospect of having Microsoft force updates on your PC that can break your sim, then go for WIndows 10.  They did exactly this in Oct of last year and it took until Dec to get a fix in place...plus they force driver updates that can cause issues.  You have to go to great lengths to stop the auto-updates from surprising you. 

The only reason I would ever recommend you update is if you upgrade to a new CPU/chipset that doesn't support Win 7.  Win 10 has given me many hours of throbbing headaches, and it does not function any better as an OS base for FSX or P3D than Win 7.  Why risk it on a currently functioning machine?

It's not really bad...it's what I have on my primary sim PC.  But it does not have the update deferral mentioned up-thread, so you have to go to some lengths to protect your config once you get it all set up.

I highly recommend the free utility OOShutup.  I use OO Software's defrag and drive image/backup software, and they're pretty good.  OOShutup allows you to put the clamps on updates pretty effectively, at least until MicroShaft figures out how to patch that out as well.

It's not the end of the world, but without some affirmative action on your part you may find yourself wishing for it to come a bit sooner late one night when you're trying to back out of an unwanted update to a dysfunctional nVidia driver (but hey, it's optimized for the latest FPS shooter).  ;-)
